Questions from RSD on B39MB exam paper for December 2013

3. (a) Explain with the aid of a clearly labelled diagram, how the photoelectric effect may be demonstrated.
Give three observations which could not be explained by the classical theory. (10)
Develop the quantum explanation as proposed by Einstein and hence or otherwise carry out the following
calculations:
(6)
Given that the work function for a photoelectric surface is 1.5 electron volts, calculate the threshold frequency
for emission. (2)
Determine the maximum energy of emitted electrons (in Joules and electron volts) when light with a frequency
of 7.9x1014 Hz is used.
(4)
Calculate the maximum velocity of the ejected electrons. (3)
4. (a) (i) Explain the Pauli Exclusion Principle.
(2)
(ii) Define the four quantum numbers and give the allowed values for each. (8)
(b) (i) Discuss the main differences between transmission electron diffraction and reflection electron
diffraction with particular emphasis on material type and electron energy. (5)
(ii) Compare and contrast the operation of an optical microscope with that of a scanning electron
microscope.
(5)
(iii) In an electron diffraction experiment, electrons accelerated through 7 kV are incident upon a sample.
A ring diffraction pattern is obtained at a distance of 25 cm from the sample. The diameter of the diffraction ring
obtained is measured to be 5 cm. Assuming first order diffraction, determine the wavelength of the electrons and
the crystal lattice spacing of the planes that are causing the diffraction.
