Unit Overview
Unit Title:
Sexual Health
Unit Summary:
In this sexual health unit, students will gain action competence by developing
an understanding around the issues surrounding sexual health.
1. They will understand the potential health affects which can come from a
sexual relationship.
2. They will be able to employ safe sex practice and sexual negotiation
strategies.
3. They will have a clear understanding of same sex attraction, stigma and
discrimination.
4. They will be able to locate access community services and participate in
promoting awareness.
These skills will give students the skills needed to be of a good sexual health
and be non-discriminatory toward people of different sexual orientations
throughout their lives outside of schooling. Their knowledge will guide them to
take competent action in any scenario in which they are faced with a dilemma
in regards to sexual health.
Curriculum links:
AusVELS Level 10:
o They explore a range of issues related to sexuality and sexual health
such as safe sex practices, sexual negotiation, same sex attraction and
the impact of alcohol on sexual and personal safety.
o They learn strategies for supporting themselves and other young people
experiencing difficulties in relationships or with their sexuality, and learn
about the community services available to assist.
o Students investigate and evaluate the policies and practices in their
school in relation to sexual and racial harassment, homophobia and/or
discrimination, and consider their rights and responsibilities in these
areas.
