Social construction of gender refers to the distinction between the sexes and this is studied by sociologies

to configure the biological difference of the sexes as well as the cultural differences in terms of identity.
Sex, in this case refers to someone's biological nature; whereas, gender, in this case refers to the cultural
aspects in correlation to their sex. Sociologists have noted that they theologize that gender is constructed
socially. Therefore, there exists perceptions on how we see gender. For example, we unconsciously think
of men as strong, masculine, and brave. Additionally, we see unconsciously think of females as soft,
weak, and frightful. Stereotypes based on misconception and how we see our milieu socially.
Moreover, feminism stands for complete equality for both sexes in terms of social, political, and
economical. Feminism first wave sprouted in Seneca Falls of 1848. Two ladies, Lucretia Mott and Mary
Stanton held a conference where they projected their perspectives in womens right and compared their
perspectives to the Declaration of Independence, which I thought was smart. In retrospect, the declaration
of independence was an act that emphasized that all men were created equal. Both women were the
pioneers for their time to take a stance and fight to have the same political rights as males.
The second wave came about in the 1960s in the form of literature. Betty Friedan wrote a book called
The Feminine Mystique, which urged women to call for a rights movement, which occurred in 1970.
However, Bettys book wasnt the only impactful book; for Simone De Beauvoir and Kate Millets books
respectively called for the movement to occur. Women at this point were reaching their breaking point in
where they were having enough of being viewed as just a housewife. Thus women began fighting to
attend college to pursue their careers.
The third wave of feminism came about because of the first two waves. This wave of feminism was about
celebrating the differences of female identity. The glass ceiling refers to a barrier women face due to their
gender, race, or ethnicity; hence, this barrier prevents them from advancing to a higher position.
The occupations that men are more likely to perform include the following: CEOs, executives of an
important company, pilots, officers. On the other hand, occupations that women are more likely to occupy
include the following: social workers, file clerks, however, they get paid very little compared to men. Thus,
in factuality, women do not make nearly as much as men do even if theyre in the same field. Its noted
that women earn 77 cents for every dollar men earned; for instance in 2012, the median income for men
was $47,715 while females earned the medium of $36,931. Accounts for wage gaps between women and
males include age, educational degree, marital status, and their work skills.
Second Shift refers to how females struggle to balance everything they do in life, from aiding their child to
working. This video acknowledges that females are the queens of multi-tasking and how females get
things done. I personally think it is possible to equalize the second shift because given if the males help
out around the home as well. For instance my parents share household duties, which I think is great. This
helps one rest while the other is doing the housework for the day.
