Part 1: Assessment Technology

https://b.socrative.com/teacher/#dashboard Solving Equations Quiz
For formative assessment or summative assessment, go to Start Quiz and select StudentPaced Immediate Feedback. Click start and then the student will receive the code from the
teacher located at the top of the page in the middle. They will enter their name and then begin the
quiz. With this particular quiz, my intention would be formative assessment. The student would
know right after they answered the question whether they got it correct. In a classroom setting, I
would allow the students to take the formative assessment in the classroom, if technology allows,
and any questions that were misses we would work on them in class. The data that I also receive
from the students will be used for me to plan my lesson accordingly. If I see that students are
struggling with a certain lesson, I will make sure that the next lesson I approach it differently to
make sure that all the students learn what they need to and in the time allotted.

Part 2: Blog Post

Introduction
In 1998, students were taking quizzes and tests with worksheets provided by teachers.
Here in 2015, it is now possible for students to take quizzes and tests with technology. Utilizing
software to support assessment is important so that students get a different perspective on test
taking. Software to support assessment is also important so that it helps educators see where
students are struggling and need improvement. The three tools that will be discussed are

KwikSurveys, ThatQuiz, and Socrative. Using technology to assess students will show students
immediately where they need practice and assist the teacher in providing the necessary feedback
to help students progress.
Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student Learning
Assessment is an important part in the teaching and learning process (Dikli, 2003; Usun,
2003; Jamil, 2012) which can provide a clearer picture on what the students have learnt and
problems they encountered (Akkya,Karakirik, & Durmus, 2005) (Chan, Ismail, 2014). Using
technology to assess students in the classroom will benefit them in the long run. Teachers can
utilize technology in the classroom so that students will see where their strengths and weaknesses
are. With some of the technology tools that are available, teachers are also able to see where the
students strengths and weaknesses are. Effective use of technology to support learning is
distinctly related to classroom teachers understandings for different modes of technology use,
basic understanding of technology, beliefs about instruction, and ability to motivate students to
use the technology (Maddux & Cummings, 1986; MacArthur, 2001) (Britten, Cassady, 2005).
With the tools that are available to educators, technology will assist teachers with quizzes that
need to be made as far as formative assessments and also summative assessments.
KwikSurveys
KwikSurveys is a technology tool that can be used to create surveys, polls, and quizzes.
The best thing about KwikSurveys is it is absolutely free and unlimited. Teachers could use this
tool to create quizzes for students as a formative assessment or a summative assessment.
KwikSurveys could also be used to poll students. If teachers came up with a few questions and
ask via the poll to see how comfortable the students are with the information presented to them,

it will help the teacher know whether to spend a little more time on that specific material or to
move forward to the next lesson.
ThatQuiz
Seeing that there are teachers out there whose primary goal is to teach math, it helps that
there is a tool for just math. ThatQuiz is a tool that test just math activities on all different levels.
Math teachers can use this tool to go over information that was learned in class. If students are
struggling with the specific lesson, the teacher could do the student or students a favor by going
over the material with them. With a group a students who are falling behind need to meet in the
classroom, teacher should allow that along with working with the other students who understand
the lesson at hand. Seeing that ThatQuiz has different levels, it would not be hard for teachers to
split students in groups to work on material that pertains to the same lesson.
Socrative
Socrative is an excellent tool to use for teachers and students. Socrative allows teachers
to let the quiz or test be a formative assessment or a summative assessment. The teacher controls
when the assessment begins and can see the students progress while they are taking the test. A
teacher controls whether the student can see their result after each question or whether the
teacher releases each question for the student. This tool will assist teachers because it allows the
teacher to see which questions the student got wrong and they can work on those questions. It
also allows the teacher, if needed, to pair students with each other so that they are helping each
other solve the problems that are presented.
Formative and Summative Assessments
Formative assessment is the evaluation of student learning based on a specific time span
at multiple points by gathering various activities and summative assessment is the process of

evaluating the student learning at any given point in time (Gunter, Gunter, 2015). Formative
assessment test students during the content being taught and summative assessments are done
after the content is completely taught. Technology can be used with formative assessments to
show students what they need to learn and with summative assessments, if formative assessment
helped, students should have no problem with summative assessments. Teachers can utilize
KwikSurveys and ThatQuiz for formative assessments and use Socrative for summative
assessments. It will help students in their education which is why teachers are here.
Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Assessment
There is always pros and cons to using technology in the classroom and there are pros
and cons to using technology to facilitate assessments. The pros of using technology to facilitate
assessments would be teachers have immediate access to see what questions students missed,
with the questions that students missed, teachers could put together groups with the questions
that were missed. The cons of using technology to facilitate assessments would be students could
copy the questions down and give them to other students or students can work together in taking
the tests and although they got the question right, it may not be accurate in helping the students.
Although teachers do not want to believe that students would do that, it is still a possibility that
students would cheat regardless of how many times they are threatened with being in trouble.
Overall, it would be in the best interest of teachers to use technology to facilitate technology. If
teachers use Socrative, they will be able to see when the students took their test and then remind
the students that cheating will not help the students in the long run when having to take a final
exam at the end of the year. Hopefully that will put a little fear in students so that they will learn.
A teacher should not only use technology to assess student learning. Students that are struggling
and not want to ask for help will find a way to get the job done. Students will work together or

help each other with the questions and there is really no way for the teacher to tell unless they are
all sitting in the classroom so that they teacher is observing them all. A teacher should also go
back to the way quizzes and tests were done and hand out papers. Students will get help with
technology but to fully know if the student has grasp the understanding of the lesson that was
taught, it would be in the best interest of teachers to let students test in the classroom.
What is the importance of assessment technology in connection with the ISTE standards?
The importance of assessment technology in connection with the ISTE standards would
be Creativity and Innovation where students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge,
and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students using technology for
assessments help them to think and process on their own without teachers having to explain the
test to them.
Concluding Paragraph for Software to Support Assessment
Using software to support assessment will benefit students in the long run. When teachers
use technology tools such as KwikSurveys, ThatQuiz, and Socrative to facilitate students
learning, it helps both the student and teacher so that the teacher can help the student. It helps
that some of the tools give you an immediate response to that, if needed, teachers can quickly
assist students. It is in the best interest for teachers to use any and every technology tool that is
available to them so that the students can learn the information that is presented to them.
