Double Lesson (100 minutes)

Triangles
- Brainstorm on padlet;
expectation that students
able to connect
o Three sides
o Three vertices
o Isosceles
o Equilateral
o Right-angle triangle
suggest to students if
unable
- What questions involving
triangles have you come
across before? Expect:
o Volume of triangular
prisms
o Perimeter/Area of a
triangle
o Angles of triangles
(add up to 360)
o Congruent triangles
(SAS, ASA, SSS)
- Propose historical Pythagoras
question
o Ladder over the moat
but tall enough to be
over the castle wall
o Label a right-angle
triangle and introduce
Hypotenuse and legs
- In ancient times, Indian,
Greek, Chinese, Egyptian,
and Babylonian
mathematicians came up
against problems like this
and realised theres a pattern
o Bring up Pythagorean
triplets
o Whats the pattern?
How is 3 related to 4
related to 5, etc
- Challenge: Can you work out
the formula?
- The pattern is

What does this mean?

o Want students to
identify for this
triangle we can
calculate the vertical
length if we have the
horizontal length
o Hope someone can
identify that if 1 side
and 1 angle are known
then we can calculate
other sides or at least
we can create similar
triangle then calculate
- This ratio is called the
tangent ratio and through it if
we have one angle and one
side we can calculate the
other side. The ratios for
every right angle triangle
was worked out a long time
ago and until calculators
were invented they were on
these tables (show picture of
trig table on projector). But
since calculators we just
have a button we can use.
- The tangent ratio is just for
the two shorter sides, label
opposite and adjacent
- There are two other ratios;
sine and cosine
- Introduce SOHCAHTOA
- Show how to use tan, cos,
and sin buttons on emulator
on screen (casio, ti or both,
depending on class)
- Trigonometry Pile-up

Summary of Exit cards
This lesson will be devoted to
finishing the Pythagoras
assignment and studying for the
test next lesson. This is the
students opportunity to ask any
questions about the topic. I will
move among the student during
slow times are talk to students I
believe are prone to struggling or

Test will take place this lesson. I

will allow 60 minutes for the test,
the first 40 minutes I will pass back
the marked Pythagoras assignment
and answer any last minute
questions. If students are ready
and wanting to start the test, this
time is easily cut down and the test
is allowed to take longer. If
students finish early, they will be

can see they are struggling

allowed to work on other things.
