Character

Allegory

Theme

Napoleon, the forced ruler of animal farm and

becomes a dictator to the other animals. He
started his campaign on the backburner but
soon took full control from snowball.

Napoleon represents the dictator of the soviet

union, Josef Stalin who, after kicking out the
communist leader Leon Trotsky, took control
and set up his own rule.

Napoleon is best represented by the theme of

power: leadership and corruption. Perhaps the
pigs didnt start off as bad people but napoleon
seemed to have it in mind and planned the take
over from the beginning when he took the
puppies and started training them.

Snowball was one of the pig leaders who

helped set up and run animal farm until he was
kicked out by napoleon. He was the one pig
who tried to keep Old majors dream alive and
continue with the idea of animalism.

Snowball represents Leon Trotsky who

was the leader of the communist party
and helped run things smoothly. He was
of course chased out of the soviet union
by Josef Stalin so that Stalin could
continue his life as the supreme ruler.

Squealer is napoleons right hand and

speaks to the animals about how
napoleons plans will work or why
something is happening on animal farm.
Being so persuasive the animals do not
question the things he says.

Squealer represents the propaganda

that Josef Stalin spread to the working
class people and specifically the
newspapers that were printed to keep
the people from raising any alarms.

Old major was the pig that started it all.

Old major before his death had a dream
that the animals would rise up and kick
the humans from the farm and take over
keeping everything they made for
themselves.

Old major represents the father of

communism Karl Marx, who wrote the
communist manifesto which is
represented in animal as the dream old
major has. He was also the father of the
idea of the revolution.

Boxer is the big horse on the block. He is

said to have the strength of 3 horses
and he is always the hardest working of
all the animals who follows everything
the pigs say with the maxim napoleon
is always right
Mr. and Mrs. Jones. The previous owners
of animal farm who were driven from
their homes by the animals because
they were tired of being oppressed by
the humans who did nothing to help and
kept them barely fed.

Boxer represents not one person but the

entire working class of The soviet union
who blindly followed their leader often to
their own deaths thinking it was for the
good of everybody.

Snowball is represented under the rules

and order theme. He tried to carry on
the ideas of old major and help animal
farm by setting up rules in which old
major himself explained during his
speech. Unfortunately this was all for
nothing after napoleon took over.
Squealer is best represented by the lies
and deceit theme. He spread napoleons
lies saying that things were good on
animal farm and that things happened
for specific reasons to help the animals.
No one questioned him until it was too
late.
Old major is represented by the Dreams,
hopes, and plans theme. It as old majors
DREAM that the revolution happened but
he never made a plan for what would
happen afterwards which is why I
believe that things happened the way
they did.
Boxer is represented by the theme of
foolishness and folly. He followed
Napoleon blinding working hard because
he thought it was right to do so. He
didnt care what he did and it ended up
having him be sent to the glue factory.
The joneses fall under the themes of
rules and order and also the theme of
power: leadership and corruption. They
fall under both because they ruled the
farm before the revolution and they
were corrupted in the sense that they
did not produce the food.

The joneses represent the tsar and his

family who originally lived and controlled
Russia until the revolution happened.
They fled the country in fear of being
executed and never came back.
