A noun is a word for a person, place or thing. Everything we see or talk about is represented by a
word which names it a noun. Sometimes a noun is the name of something you can touch (bag,
cake, computer) and sometimes it will name something you cannot touch (happiness, mile,
bravery).
In Spanish all nouns have a gender. The gender is either masculine or feminine. When you learn a
new Spanish noun you should learn the gender. Below is a table which will help you to work out if a
noun is masculine or feminine.

masculine
feminine

What the dictionary will

say
nm/masc
nf/fem

You should colour code nouns as you learn them to help you remember their gender.
Nouns can also be plural. This is when there is more than one of something. The noun is still
masculine or feminine, but the word for the changes to los for masculine or las for feminine and you
will sometimes use unos or unas to say some.

Adjectives are words which describe nouns. They include colours, opinion words (boring, funny) and
any other words which can describe a noun.
Adjectives in Spanish change their spelling when they describe a feminine noun. Most adjectives
just add an a.
Adjectives also change their spelling when they describe a plural noun. When you describe a plural
noun in Spanish, add an s. If the adjective ends in an e then it doesnt change e.g. grande = big.
Dont forget that the Spanish words for my, your, his, her etc. are also adjectives and change their
spellings to suit the thing they own!

Verbs are doing words and must appear in every sentence! Verbs have two different forms:
infinitive verbs the spelling you find in a dictionary, translated with to in front (to go, to play, to have)
conjugated verbs these are verbs which have been changed according to the person or tense
Infinitive verbs are useful for opinions and the future tense, but you will need to know how to conjugate verbs
properly to be able to speak Spanish really well!
In Spanish there are 2 main groups of verbs regular and irregular. There are then also 3 groups of regular
verbs! Sounds complicated, but it actually makes it easier to apply the rules once you know them!
The three groups of regular verbs in Spanish are:
ar verbs which have an infinitive ending in ar (estudiar, hablar)
er verbs which have an infinitive ending in er (comer, beber)
ir verbs which have an infinitive ending in ir (vivir)
PRESENT TENSE
To conjugate regular verbs in the present tense, you must first remove the ar, er or ir and then add the
ending to match the subject pronoun.

Conjugations of irregular verbs just have to be learnt as they dont follow the rules! Below are the four most
common irregular verbs.

REFLEXIVE VERBS
When you describe certain activities (e.g. daily routine) you have to use reflexive verbs. These work in the
same way as other verbs in the present tense, but they have an extra reflexive pronoun!
lavarse to get washed
me lavo I get washed
te lavas you get washed
se lava he gets washed
se lava she gets washed
nos lavamos we get washed
os lavis you get washed
se lavan they get washed

PRETERITE - PAST
You use the preterite to talk about what you did in the past.
To conjugate regular verbs in the preterite tense, you must first remove the ar, er or ir and then add the
ending to match the subject pronoun.
