COUNTY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SERVICE

CONDITIONS FOR VOLUNTEER WORK AT TUNSTALL FOREST ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTRE


Volunteers are expected to obey any instructions given by the site manager concerning work and
general conduct on site.
Volunteers must have DAB clearance and have completed the required training courses before
commencing any volunteering work at the site. The site manager will need to see proof of completion
before giving permission to volunteer.
Volunteers are reminded of the need to take care for their own safety and the safety of other persons
engaged on the site that may be affected by their work; safe working practices must be followed at all
times. If in doubt, the site manager should be consulted. Suitable clothing and footwear must be
worn whilst on site. Any accident on the site must be reported to the site manager and entered in the
site accident book. The site manager will arrange first aid treatment, if required.
Photographs/digital images are regularly taken on sites for use in talks, on promotional material and
for the Suffolk CC web site, if you do not wish to be on these photographs/images then please inform
the site manager. Volunteers may not use their own cameras without the permission of the site
manager.

PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE - VOLUNTEERS


The County Council has approved the introduction of a Personal Accident Insurance Policy for those
volunteers assisting the County Council in the discharge of its functions. The premium for the policy
will be paid by the County Council and the relevant details are as follows:Definition of Volunteers
It has been agreed with the Insurers that for the purpose of this policy ' volunteers' are defined as
persons between the ages of 14 and 74.

specifically authorised to carry out these duties.

Volunteers assisting the County Council in civil emergencies are excluded from this policy.
Benefits
The benefits detailed in the policy are as follows:1)

Death or permanent total disablement - 15,000.


Permanent partial disablement - a percentage of the capital benefit payable above depending
on the degree of disablement.
Temporary total disablement - 50 per week with 104 week indemnity period.

Claims
Claims made under this policy should be addressed to the Director of Environment and Transport,
Endeavour House, Russell Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, and must contain full details of the accident to
which they relate.
Accidents
Any volunteers involved in an accident, however slight, whilst undertaking duties for the County
Council, should report it immediately to the full-time paid officer of the County Council who is in
charge of the work, or the officer who authorised the work to be carried out. Full details of the incident
e.g. time, place, injuries sustained, names of witnesses etc., should be stated to enable the officer to
complete an accident report form.
Health and Safety at Work
Volunteers are reminded of the need to take care for their own safety and the safety of other persons
employed on the site who may be affected by their work. When using mechanical equipment and
tools safe working practices should be followed. If in doubt, ask the supervisor!
First Aid
The supervisor normally carries a first aid kit. Before commencing to use mechanical equipment or
tools, or to work in the vicinity of someone using such equipment, ensure that you know the
whereabouts of the first aid kit and the person trained to render first aid.
Public Liability
The County Council effects a Public Liability Insurance Policy that will indemnify the Authority in
respect of all claims for compensation arising from injury to persons or damage to property caused by
the negligence of the County Council, its employees, or volunteers acting on its behalf.
Such claims should be referred to the Director of Environment and Transport and any correspondence
received from the Third Party involved should be referred unanswered to the Director of Environment
and Transport who will forward it to the County Treasurer for attention. Further, no oral or written
statement should be given without first contacting the Director of Environment and Transport.
