Section 4.1: John the Baptist
1.

How would others describe him?


Matthew: He was popular and people sought him out.
Mark: Hes preparing the way for someone greater.
Luke: He called the people repent.
John: He warned the people about what was coming.

2.

What was his message?


Matthew: They thought he was the Messiah and he was a teacher to all.
Mark: Repent and do good and to be ready for the messiah aka he was
bossy.
Luke: He prepared people by letting them know how they were wrong and
what to do to change that. He also fulfills prophecy.
John: He preached to anyone who would listen.

3. Why was he so important?


Matthew: Thought he was a prophet. But the Pharisees thought he was
crazy
Mark: Jesus was coming and he was more powerful.
Luke: He prepared the way for Jesus
John: He baptized people.
4. What did he do?
Matthew: They thought he was Elijah/the Christ/ the Prophet
Mark: He is not the Christ but the Christ is coming.
Luke: He announced the coming Messiah.
John: He baptized people with water.

Section 4.2: Jesus Baptism


Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River.
Why did Jesus need to be baptized?
To show us what we should do as followers of Christ.
To symbolically begin his ministry.
What are the differences between the two baptisms?
John cleansed the outside.

Jesus cleansed the inside.
What does it mean that God sent down a dove?
To show that Gods ownership of Jesus, his recognition that Jesus is who he
says he is.
To give confirmation and authentication of Jesus and his ministry.
It was a blessing but also a foreshadowing that Jesus would be a sacrifice.
What does the dove symbolize?
That Jesus ministry was about peace.
That his ministry was about the poor.
That Jesus would be a sacrifice.

Section 4.3: Jesus Temptation


1. It was 40 days which is about how long a person can go before dying.
2. It was real and not just symbolic. This helps us know that Jesus can
sympathize with us because he has been through temptations and struggles.
It also shows he genuinely was both God and man.
3. Jesus was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit NOT Satan. This is important
because then we know that God wanted him to face these struggles. They
were for a purpose.
4. What were the 3 categories of temptations Jesus faced?
1. Lust of the Flesh- This is the physical temptations. The temptations
like food and shelter and comfort.
2. Pride of life- Putting yourself above everything. That the ends
justify the means. That its ok to do something wrong as long as
your reason is really really good.
3. Lust of the Eyes- the idea that we could have power or be powerful
or make our life worthwhile.
But Jesus withstood them all by doing 3 things.
1. Scriptures
a. Jesus knew the scriptures because he had studied them.
b. They gave him confidence and guidance.
2. Prayer
a. connection with God.
b. Wisdom
c. Confidence and guidance.
d. clarification

3. Fleeing- Jesus sent Satan away. You dont have to allow him to hang
around.
