Exploring the Magic Scale Part 2

There are 4 coins and one of them is a fake coin. The fake coin weighs differently than the others but you cannot
tell by looking. You have a scale. The function of the scale is to be able to tell which side of the scale is heavier.
Standard Task: Can you find the fake coin and tell whether it is heavier or lighter by using the scale 3 times?
Challenging Task: Can you do it if there are 8 coins in total?

Very Challenging Task: Can you do it if there are 12 coins in total?

Explain how 4 and 8 coins can be done. Those that want to challenge themselves can search Balance Puzzle.
10 Bags of Coins: Higher Order Thinking
A thief stole 10 bags of coins. He remembered that one bag contained fake coins, and the rest were all real.

10 min

During his escape he forgot which bag is the fake one, but the only thing he remembers is that the real coins
weigh 1gram and the fake coins weigh 1.1grams. He has only one chance to use a digital scale in the town to
obtain an accurate measurement, as more attempts will make him look suspicious.
How can he identify the fake coins?
Elaborate: Let the class brainstorm about ways that might work.
Come up with an idea: Take 1 coin from each bag!
What is the outcome: Always going to be10.1grams
Does it solve the problem: No
Evaluate the methods used, and come up with a method that works.
Conclusion
Questions seem so easy when the answers are provided. But that takes away the thinking process.
The more thinking we do, the better we understand the topic.
