Homework Guidelines in Prior Lake - Savage Area Schools & La ola del lago:
What a festive day we have had at La ola del lago! Im certain your weekends will
be full of high energy activities. Attached to this newsletter are some photos
from the fun day we had. Thanks to all of the parents that helped plan the festivities. Our kiddos had a blast!
One question I have been receiving (which is very common!) is what are appropriate homework guidelines for Kindergarten and first grade students. Over the
next few weeks, I will be focusing my newsletters on how you as parents can best
support your childs learning at home. The number one question I receive from
families is how they can best support their immersion student when they do not
speak (or only limited) Spanish. Trust me I will get into the very specific nuances of immersion education in the upcoming weeks, but for now I would like to
share the homework guidelines that Prior Lake - Savage Area Schools abides by.
We recommend NO more than 15 minutes of homework per night per child
for grade one, and no more than 10 minutes per night for Kindergarten. Of
course this can vary from night to night, and from activity to activity. (By no
means discourage your child from reading or practicing math if they are interested!)
Please review these guidelines. If you have any further questions, please contact
your childs teacher, or feel free to contact me as well.
Prior Lake Savage Area Schools HOMEWORK TIPS FOR PARENTS

Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places
with other distractions, such as people coming and going.

Help your child with time management.

Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Dont let your child leave
homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning
or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves
getting together with classmates.

Be positive about homework.

Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.

When your child does homework, you do homework.

Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to
things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read
too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook.

When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not

answers.
Giving answers means your child will not learn the material.
Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets
rough, someone will do the work for him or her.

When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it.
Cooperate with the teacher. It shows your child that the
school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by
the teacher.

f homework is meant to be done by your child alone,

stay away.
Too much parent involvement can prevent homework from
having some positive effects. Homework is a great way for
kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills.

Stay informed.
Talk with your childs teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your childs class rules are.

Help your child figure out what is hard homework and

what is easy homework.
Have your child do the hard work first. This will mean he will
be most alert when facing the biggest challenges. Easy material
will seem to go fast when fatigue begins to set in.

The Wave of the Lake

Boo Dash
Thanks to all who participated in
the BOO! Dash last Saturday. What a great time we
had. The weather was a bit cold,
but a wonderful time was had by all.
Here is a nice little write up that

Conferences
November conferences are coming

Spanish 5 Visit
Next Friday Prior Lake High School Spanish 4 & 5
students will be coming to work with our La ola del
lago students! This was a wildly popular experience
for both parties last year. Over the course of the
year, they will come a total of four times. Approximately 60 high school students will prepare lessons,
bring stories, play games, and of course speak
Spanish the entire time. After last years visits, I had
a few high school students tell me they were interested in pursuing a career in immersion education.

Pick Up / Drop Off Procedures

As we continue to grow, so do our pick-up and dropoff procedures; we are constantly monitoring and
adjusting them to ensure maximum security and safety. Because we have our Circle of Friends Preschool
beginning at 9:10, we begin unloading cars for them
around 8:50 in order to avoid huge traffic gridlocks
on Franklin Trail, County Rd. 44, and Hwy. 13. Many
of our LODL students also have younger siblings in
Circle of Friends preschool and drop off both students at the same time. If possible, please try to
drop-off your LODL child after 9:10 if your family
does not have preschool siblings being dropped
off. The official start time to LODL is not until 9:20,
and all of the students arriving on buses enter the
building beginning at 9:13. We lock the doors precisely at 9:20. If you arrive after 9:20, you would
need to park and walk your child into the office to
check in. We appreciate your support.

continuing to offer high-quality programs. As a result,
open enrollment is currently closed for the 2015/16
school year at the following schools:

Families living outside of the PLSAS attendance boundaries may still apply to open enroll into our district at
any time. Please list your top three school choices.
We will contact you in April regarding your application.
The decision to close open enrollment does not affect
families with children moving into the school district
or families currently residing within the district boundaries.
