Title of Project: Solar Panel Build
Thematic Area(s): Creativity
Expected Start Date: June 11, 2016
Expected End Date: July 30, 2016
GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
For me, choosing a college major was sort of a difficult thing. While I had known for a long time that I
wanted to enter into engineering, I had no idea about the different majors and which one to choose. So, like many
others, I chose to study one of the broadest disciplines within engineering, Mechanical. As I continue to learn and
understand more about the major and engineering as a whole I can see that I made the right choice. The ability to
work on any kind of project, no matter if it involves computers, cell phones, airplanes, or bridges, mechanical
engineers can be and are involved in the design, testing, and building processes. This works perfectly for me
because I am interested in a broad number of things.
One of my biggest passions within mechanical engineering is for energy/power production. Particularly, I
am interested in developing and improving renewable sources of energy. To me, it just makes sense to try and find
a source of power production that is more efficient, less costly, and less harmful to earth, especially knowing that
the majority of our current production method (ie coal, natural gas, oil) will eventually run out. Because of this
passion, my proposed self-designed honors experience is to design and build a solar panel out of used solar cells.
The first step involved with this project will be to research. I will have to look at the different types of solar
cells I can buy, the different suppliers, and the effects of buying used versus new, as well as obviously different
configurations and mountings of the solar cells and the construction of the panel. Secondly, I will have to sketch a
few designs for the solar panel as well as become familiar with several tools that will be used in the making of the
solar panel. Third, I will have to build a prototype solar panel and test it to see if I should make any modifications
or changes to my original design. Then I will have to actually build my solar panel. A goal of mine will be to make
the solar panel near professional grade power output for a similar size/model, I would like to be within at least 2/3
the amount a professional solar cell could output.
My advisor for this project will be Dr. Bucks who was the professor for several of my classes my first
semester. In addition to being my professor, Dr. Bucks became a good advisor for me and someone who I could
come to for help if I needed it. Dr. Bucks also is well-qualified for the job because he ran the foundations lab using
solar panels and holds a MS in Electrical Engineering as well as his PhD in engineering education. Throughout this
experience, I intend to reflect by recording my thoughts in a private journal, including difficulties, things that went
well, and also record a step-by-step l that I will publish so that anyone interested can build their own solar panel.
I would like to accomplish this project during the summer following my Freshmen year. With research
beginning in May, prototyping towards the end of May, building the actual panel beginning mid-June, completing
the panel by the end of July, and having all reflection materials and DIY instructions done by August 15 th

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Experience Advisor: Dr. Greg Bucks, +1 513 556 0032, bucksgy@UCMAIL.UC.EDU , 885 Rhodes
Dr. Bucks was a professor for three of my courses my first semester and he became a person I could go to when I needed
help with anything. In addition to our personal relationship, Dr. Bucks I svery qualified to help me with my project, being
a professor of the foundations lab where they work with solar panels as well as earning his Masters in Electrical
Engineering. I plan to utilize Dr. Bucks in the research phase and the design phase mostly. His expertise will be more
helpful here, also I intend to have him help me troubleshoot and improve my prototype after completion.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
My reflection method for this experience will be to journal, in a notebook and in a Word document. After each
week, I will journal in the notebook about the progress I have made towards my three learning outcomes. Questions to
consider here will be:
1. How did the work I did this week correlate with my three learning outcomes?
2. What progress was made to the learning outcomes that were worked on?
3. How could I have made better progress towards fulfilling these learning out comes?
4. What will I work on next week to continue making progress towards my learning outcomes?
5. What were the problems and challenges I faced in the research, design, and development processes this week?
5
As mentioned, an additional reflection method will be the Word document in which I will record the steps I take in
designing and building my solar panel in order to offer a DIY guide to others after my project is completed.
