DESIGN OF RINGWALL

RINGWALL FOR STORAGE TANKS RISED ABOVE GROUND LEVEL- DESIGN

GEOMETRICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
1. Thickness - (i) Minimum thick of ring wall shall not be lesss than
300mm as per API650.
(ii) The centreline diameter of the ringwall should be equal to
nominal diameter of the tank or PCD line of the tank.

ANALYTICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

2. Minimum height rise of the tank above FFL/FGl shall not be less
than 300 mm.

(ii) Shear and moment at base of the tank due to Wind & Seismic loads
- from mechanincal vendor.
(iii) Percentage of tank load acting on the ringwall and on enclosed soil
are calculated based on the ratio of area it bears the tank.

3. Depth of foundation of ringwall not less than 600 from lowest

grade level as per API 650.
4. Tank Grades shall be of fine and uniform material which forms
the contact with the tank bottom directly. Unless specified by the
tank manufacturers, the fine finished tank grade below the tank
shall be sloped from its outer periphery to its center at a slope of

DESIGN :
Reinforcement for hoop tension:
(i) hoop tension / yeild stress of steel = Ast .
(ii) Area of steel require due to hoop tension is horizontal bars of
ringwall.
(iii) Total hoop steel area required shall not be less than the area of
steel required for temperature changes & shrinkages ie., 0.025 times the
vertical cross-sectional area of the ringwall.
Vertical Reinforcement:
(i) One meter width strip wall considered and it has to be designed for
bending moments due to : Given Moment (EQ/WL) , moment from
shear due to EQ or WL and earth pressure.
(ii) Minimum Vertical reinforcement required for temperature &
shrinkage is 0.0015 times the horizontal cross-sectional area of the
ringwall.

LOADS: (i) Uncorroded and corroded weights of steel tank ; empty

weight, operating weight and hydro test weighs- from Mechnanical
vendor.

ANALYSIS: (i) Base bearing pressure of ringwall footing pad due to

Percentage of tank load shared on wall and due to the
moments(EQ/WL) are calculated and checked with allowable bearing
pressure.
(ii) Overturning check : overturning moments - bending
moment(EQ/WL) at base of the tank.
Resisting moments- Counter moment due to Corroded weight of the
tank plus sel-weight of the ringwall and its footing pad. The factor of
safety for overturning check is 2.
(iii) Hoop tension : Stress on ringwall inner face due to : Percentage of
tank load shared by enclosed soil abd lateral earth pressure of enclosed
soil . This hoop stress multiplied by inner radius of ringwall will give the
