Explain what a proper noun is.
Give at least three examples of proper nouns.
Ask and answer questions about nouns.
Describe and present poster board on a vacation spot using complete sentences.

Describe how this lesson is developmentally appropriate:

Vygotsky's theory promotes learning contexts in which students play an active role in
learning, which is why this hands-on activity and discussion will help promote students
learning of nouns and more specifically proper nouns.

Pre-Assessment
To assess prior knowledge we would create an anchor chart with nouns divided into
person, place, and thing. Would would ask students to name a noun and which section it
belongs in. We would then ask students to see if they could name a proper noun.

Assessment
How will the students demonstrate that they have attained the goals of the lesson?
The students will think of their favorite place and create a poster advertising their place
using nouns and proper nouns.
Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
Provide exemplar student responses/products (model outcome).
Post-Assessment
The students work will be evaluated by presenting their poster. The poster will be graded
by a checklist including creativity, color, use of nouns and proper nouns.

Accommodations:
For students with shortened attention spans, we will place them next to me during the
lesson portion to keep them more focused on the activity at hand. We will also keep
close proximity to these students during the exploration portion. If a child needs help
spelling or with cutting out picture, we will get to their level and assist them. I will also
follow individual IEP plans.

Lesson Opening:
To begin we will ask students to write their name down on a piece of paper.
We will then ask for a few volunteers to come to the front and show their names.
We will then pose the question to the class: why did you all start your names with a
capital letter?
The class will have a discussion as to why we capitalize names.
We will explain the the reason we capitalize them is because they are proper nouns. This
will be a bridge to our instruction portion.

Instructional Input
We will put the definition of a noun on the SMART Board.
We will introduce a noun, proper noun, person, place, thing, or idea.
We will give examples of a noun and proper noun.
Throughout the lesson we will ask students for an example of a noun or proper
noun along with asking if they remember the definition of a noun.

Guided Practice
We will work together to create an anchor chart of nouns and proper nouns.

will have each student think of one noun and one proper noun that will go onto

We will then hand out a worksheet and have them draw anything they see in the
D classroom that is a person, place, thing, or idea in the correct column.
o We will walk around and provide help when needed.
Next they will each present one thing they drew on their sheet to the class.

Independent Practice
Students will create a poster advertising their favorite place using nouns and proper
nouns.
Students will do a Noun Hunt at home, finding objects around their house that are
a noun or proper noun.

Lesson Closing
We will review our noun chart after poster presentations.
The students will give an exit slip with a written example of a noun or proper noun.
