About Katie
Katie Wardrobe is a Melbourne-based music technology trainer and
consultant with a passion for helping music teachers through her business
Midnight Music (www.midnightmusic.com.au). She runs hands-on
professional development workshops throughout Australia and a popular
series of online courses. Her workshops and courses focus on
incorporating technology into the music curriculum through a range of
creative projects.
Katie is a qualified teacher and has worked in a variety of music and
education-related workplaces, including Sibelius Australia and Orchestra
Victoria. She has also worked as a freelance copyist, music arranger and transcriber for more than 20 years.
In 2011 she released an ebook for users of open-source software program MuseScore, titled MuseScore:
The Essential Beginner's Guide and in 2012 she authored a keyboard and music technology program for
middle school students titled Studio Sessions (published by MusicEDU). Katie has had articles published
by magazines such as Music In Action and Education Technology Solutions.
In 2011, 2013 and 2014 Katie worked as the Project Manager of the Soundhouse Music Alliance's bi-annual
Music Technology in Education Conference and she has presented at more than 40 other music and
education-related conferences and events. She is also fast-becoming known as an expert in the practical
integration of iPads in music education and published iPad Projects for the Music Classroom (an ebook
with accompanying videos) in 2014.

Introduction: about this guide

As a music technology software trainer, Im always on the lookout for quality free and low-cost resources for
teachers, students and other musicians. In 2009, I ran my first Music Technology On A Shoestring workshop
at a conference in Melbourne, Australia, where I presented a number of the resources on these pages. Over
time, the list of resources has more than tripled and I decided that it was time to make a guide which I could
share easily and update on an annual basis.
Please note that while most of the resources mentioned are completely free to use, some of them have
optional paid upgrades which unlock extra features, levels or services. I highly recommend upgrading to a
paid option if your budget allows - the extra features are always better and in some cases upgrading will
simplify the way you track student work.
Also - a few of the links in this guide are aliate links which means I will receive a small commission if you
choose to use them to sign up for a paid product. It does not cost you any extra when using my link and it
may buy me the occaisional coee here and there :)
I hope you enjoy the guide!
