I have attempted to complete my Bachelors degree since 1997.
Throughout this time I have acquired a certificate in Massage Therapy (Myomassology) and I have an Associate degree of Arts, but I always strived in the completion in a Bachelors degree. I spent most of my time in school trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I have switched my major a few times, starting out wanting to be a physical therapist, and thought about applying to the Psychology or Sociology program. I feel choosing Social work as a profession is my purpose in life, because its natural and I always have been a person that helps others, whether it is being a great listener, providing resources, or helping a person be the best they can potentially be. Throughout the Social Work program I have gain so much knowledge from my professors like professor Huff within my Practice Methods course I and II. He made me feel comfortable with role playing and voicing my point of view in class discussions. Jeannie Lawerence was helpful in the Diversity, Oppression, and Social Justice course by identifying practice behaviors. We were able to learn how to advocate for clients, recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice, and make ethical decisions by applying standards of the NASW Code of Ethics. The most Ive gained from Professor Lawerence was to engage diversity and difference in practice by gaining sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal bias and values in working with diverse groups; recognize and communicate the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. These professors have been an inspiration and have guided me through the program by providing me with the competencies and knowledge to become an effective social worker. When I applied for the Social work Program I considered the WOW online program, but I am personally thankful I decided to take classes on campus, because I have gained and have built a rapport and relationships with the professors and my classmates. We have become very close throughout this journey and I know I will have a connection and will remain close after the
program. I plan on utilizing these relationships as colleagues and maybe
even utilizing them as a network connection, for example when resources are needed or referring clients to them when its not my specialty. Throughout my internship I have gained knowledge in relation to the social work profession. I have been able to learn about the administrative side of social work at a non-profit agency and also facilitate an adolescent girl group. This experience has given me the opportunity to utilize my general practice skills and incorporate my learning style of practice. I cant believe that this journey has come to an end. I have envisioned the day when I walk across the stage to receive my Bachelors degree and Im glad to say its finally here! I cant believe will soon be able to say Im a social worker. I have had some difficult times throughout the program, but for the most part I have been able to enjoy this journey. My future and personal goal is to start the MSW program in the fall of 2016. Once I graduate with my MSW, I plan to take the licensure exam soon after graduation. I hope to work as a school social worker, and possibly move to in Alpharetta, Georgia and start my practice there. I dont want to only be confined to school social work, so I plan on gaining some experience in other fields in social work, preferably mental health, and possibly the hospital setting. Working at my internship has given me the knowledge and helped me develop a want for other discipline within the field. My supervisor at my field placement is not only a LMSW, but she also is a psychotherapist. I feel I could very well perform psychotherapy and it could be helpful with my social work profession. I have gained so much knowledge during this experience which has shaped me and helped me develop an interest in child development and mental health. I really want to work with this population, because I feel its important to make a difference in a young persons life giving them a chance to make a change before their responsibilities change in the course of their life. I know I have more to learn in this profession and I am ready for the challenge ahead. My personal goal is to gain more skills
and have the abilities to develop into a competent and professional social worker.
