HYDROELECTRIC

What is the source?

The source is water.
hyro is a greek root/prefix which means water.
To understand hydropower you need to understand the water
cycle:
Solar energy heats the water causing evaporation
Water vapor condenses into clouds and fall as precipitation
(rain, snow, etc.)
Water flows into a river ocean stream where it can be
evaporated to begin the cycle all over again.

Where can it be found?

Hydroelectric power plants can be found near a water
source(streams,rivers,etc,).

How is it converted into useful energy?

The amount of available energy in moving water is
determined by the volume of flow and the change in
elevation (or fall) from one point to another.
Water descending rapidly from a high point, like Niagara
Falls in New York, also has substantial energy in its flow.
Water flows through a pipe, or penstock, then pushes
against and turns blades in a turbine to spin a generator to
produce electricity.
In a run-of-the-river system, the force of the current
applies the needed pressure, while in a storage system,
water is accumulated in reservoirs created by dams, then

Is it available in our state, and

community ?
Where?
There is a hydropower station in our state, however it isn't in
our community because it is in Lawrence in the Kansas river.

Is it easy to convert it?

A hydroelectric power station is one that generates energy by
using the kinetic energy (waves) and potential energy.
Rough one gallon of water can produce about 1 kilowatt of
energy.

What Kind?
There are three types of hydropower facilitiesImpoundment
Diversion
Pumped storage
The most common type of hydroelectric power plant is an impoundment
facility. An impoundment facility, typically a large hydropower system, uses
a dam to store river water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir
flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to
produce electricity. The water may be released either to meet changing
electricity needs or to maintain a constant reservoir level.

Can this be used in homes? School? What

would need to change? Can it also be
used for transportation?
Yes we could but it would take a lot of water to
power everything. The amount of energy depends on
water and the weather as well. we would need to
change the amount of hydroelectric power plants
there are. Currently 7% is created by these power
plants.

What are some

Benefits and
Drawbacks?

Benefits
Renewable:
This means we cannot use up all of the water.
Green:
Generating electricity with hydropower is not polluting itself.

Drawbacks
Droughts:
Electricity and energy prices are related to how much water is
available.
Expensive:
Building these power plants are expensive

Could this form of energy be contribute to

pollution? Land, water, air, and noise? Can
it fix our pollution problem?
This type of energy does not contribute to any kind of pollution
because hydroelectric power only uses water to make energy.
And of course the plant. Yes we believe it can fix our pollution
problem but it will cost money.

Opinions?
We think that this would be a good way of making energy
because there is no waste that harms the environment and we
won't be using up anything. Unless all the water in the world
somehow dries up. Yes we will need money for it, but this is the
US, we spend 30 million dollars on campaigns, so why can't we
spend money on something other than getting Katy Perry to
sing for us.
