School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 2nd

Lesson Focus: Catching objects.

# Of students: 20

Equipment and Facilities:

Blacktop
20 hula hoops

Safety Considerations:
Students may trip over the hula hoop when theyre
throwing the ball up in the air and their eyes are
looking at the ball not the hula hoop. If a student
does trip up over the hula hoop then I will check if
theyre ok. If theyre not ok then I will send them to
the school nurse.

Objectives:

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT run and freeze at a high level of intensity. SWBAT underhand and
overhand throw a ball, as well as catching it. SWBAT throw a ball to themselves and catch it
while clapping when the ball is in the air.
Cognitive (C): SBWAT understand the COTS for catching and be able to relay them back to
me if randomly asked.
H-R Fitness (H): SWBAT see the benefits of exercising and how fun it can be.

CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODEL CONTENT STANDARDS:

I. Demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
II. Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning and
performance of physical activities.
III. Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.

NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS a physically literate person:

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
2. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

Describe the pre-class arrangement

Teacher: I am waiting near the area that the students are going to be doing their instant activity at, and I am
waiting for the students to arrive.
Students: The students are walking to the blacktop area where I am standing.
Equipment: Hula hoops with objects are set up on one part of the blacktop.

The goal for the statues is to

curator can turn around

the curator sees the statues
moving then the statues have
to go back to the beginning

Assess and maintain a

level of physical fitness to
improve health and
performance.

In this activity the students

will be running around a lot
which will contribute to them
maintaining a good fitness
level. Being fit will help a lot
with living a healthy life and
the students performance in
sports.

I will tell them to return to

for instructions.
Set Induction:
Last week we went over how
to underhand throw a ball.
Today were going to
practice catching different
objects.
Purpose:
Learning how to catch is
important because it is
important in so many
different sports. In baseball if
you catch someones hit then
you get them out, therefore
catching is very important in
baseball.
Lesson Core - Task 1:
Students are going to be
standing in a hula hoop.
Each student has a ball and
their aim is to throw the ball
up in the air and catch it
while staying in their hula
hoop. After the students have
thrown the ball up a few
times I will them to throw the
ball up and clap before they
catch the ball. After they
have done this a few times I
will then try to get them to
throw the ball up, twirl, and
then catch the ball.
*I will explain the COTS
here
Demonstration Plan:
Before the students are
standing in their hoops I will

Start/Stop Signals: To get the

students attention I will say to
the class, If youre listening
to me put your hands on your
head.
Grouping Strategies:
I will group the students by
getting half of the class to line
up on one side of the line, and
the other half line up on the
opposite line so the people
they are facing are their
partners.

task

5. Applies knowledge of
concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics
related to movement and
performance.
I will place an emphasis on
the concept of catching as it
is a movement that is very
important in many different
sports.

6. Applies knowledge of
concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics
related to movement and
performance.
The students will show their
knowledge of the concept of
catching an object.
Teaching Cues for Task 1:
Eyes on the ball, hands
together, quick reactions, soft
hands.
Common Errors Task 1:
1. Students standing out of
their hula hoop to catch the
ball.
2. Students not being able to
clap fast enough before the
ball comes back down.

Questions to Check
Understanding
1.Do you stand in your hula
hoop or outside of it? (In the
hula hoop)
2.Are you trying to throw the
ball high or low? (High)
Transition:
Once the activity is finished I
will get the students to pick
up the hula hoop they were
standing in and the ball they
were using, and bring it over
to me. Once they do this I
will let them have a water
break if they need one. Then I
will get them to sit down in
front of me, with the
equipment away from them to
keep them from getting
distracted.
Lesson Core - Task 2:
The students will be put into
pairs. They will stand on a
certain line so everyone is
starting the same distance
apart. Theyll throw the ball
to each other focusing on
their catching skills. If they
catch the ball then they take
a step back. Students can do
overhand or underhand.
Demonstration Plan:
I will choose one of the
students to stand opposite me

and I will do a demonstration

of throwing the ball to a
partner and then get them to
throw it to me so I can show
the catching side of it too. Ill
then show the example of
taking a step back after
catching the ball.
Questions to Check
Understanding
1. What do we do once
we have caught the
ball? (Take a step
backwards)
2. Are we throwing
underhand or
overhand? (Both)
Adaptations
Task 1:
If the activity is too hard then
I will tell the students to just
throw the ball up in the air
and not worry about
clapping or twirling. If its
too easy then I will tell the
students to see how many
claps they can do before they
catch the ball.
Task 2:
If the activity is too hard then
I will tell the students not to
take a step when they catch
the ball and just stay in the
same spot. If the activity is
too easy then I will tell the
students to get to the furthest
distance they can throw and
catch the ball.

Common Errors Task 2:
1. Students throwing the
object with too much strength
and their partner not being
able to catch it.
2. Students taking a step back
when their partner catches it.

CLOSURE:
Good job today everyone!
Everyone tell me the main
points of how to catch a ball.
Great!
On Wednesday we are going
to practice more of this so we
can be great catchers

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: I will assess the students by seeing how successful they are at
catching in task 1 and 2. Their success levels depend on if they catch the ball or not.
