Module 1: Writing Assignment

Introduction
When becoming a teacher and having your own classroom there are many factors to
consider. As a teacher you need to learn the many ways to become an effective teacher through
good teaching, research and strategies that can be used to meet each of the students unique
learning styles. Student diversity is another big fact to consider. The schools have amazingly
increased in numbers throughout the years. Teachers need to understand and incorporate each
individual aspect or differences, so that every students needs may be met and accommodated.
Classroom management is also a big part of teaching. The classroom is the learning environment
where each student will spend many years learning, it will become their home away from home.
My paper provides information on chapters one through three of the book Learning & Teaching:
Research based Methods (by Don Kauchak and Paul Eggen). Included are key points from the
TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 competencies: one, two, five and six.
Learning to Teach
Chapter 1 focuses mainly on effective teaching, different methods, research, and student
learning. There is no teacher that teaches the same; therefore each teacher is unique. The

characteristics and ways of each individual teacher are all different. Teaching is not easy, in fact
it can be a bit challenging. Teachers go through changes each year and are being held responsible
by standards and high stakes testing. Effective teaching has become very complex. Research
serves as a guide to many teachers in their teaching practice. Research has helped many teachers
make many professional decisions. Teachers must reflect on each students learning styles and
take into account their physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities. In Competency one
strategies used to understand the human growth and development are introduced by several
researchers. Jean Piaget uses categories for cognitive development in children from birth through
adulthood. Lev Vygotsky uses scaffolding as a guidance of learning trough a zone of proximal
development in the social and physical aspects. Erik Erikson uses a series of emotional tasks
during different stages of life. To be an effective teacher it is important to understand the process
by which human growth and development occurs.
Student Diversity
Diversity in the classroom includes many categories and differences; for example race,
ethnicity, gender, culture, special needs, gifted and talented and among others. Today the
classrooms are amazingly diverse and will continue to increase in the future. Chapter two and
Competency two describe the many diverse groups of learners and programs to help each
students individual need. Teachers should always recognize diversity, adapt and incorporate
everyday teaching around it. Multicultural education is a great way for students to learn and
appreciate each others diversity.
Creating Productive Learning Environments: Classroom Management

In Competency five & six as well as chapter three, classroom management and student
behavior are addressed. Classroom management plays a big part in student learning. Teachers
must have a productive learning environment where students have accessible materials, feel safe
and have an orderly classroom. Have classroom rules and procedures available to students in
ways they will understand, as these will be implemented throughout the year. Teachers are
encouraged to use different strategies as behavior in the classroom arises.
Conclusion
Teachers play a very important role in a students life. They are an important influence in
their success, and therefore it is with upmost importance for the teacher to be prepared to the best
of his or her ability. In preparation a teacher must practice effective teaching, classroom
management, diversity, student behavior as well as be flexible and readily available for new and
upcoming research, information and strategies to improve student teaching. As a teacher you
never stop learning, you become more aware of situations and how to deal with them on an
everyday basis. Students are the main focus and it is the teachers job to make sure that all
students learning needs are fulfilled.

Classroom Rules:

As I chose these rules I thought about my students, I thought about the grade level I want
to teach. I would like to teach a Pre-k classroom. To me it is important for my little students to
know the basics of everyday life, implementing them at a very young age. They will carry this
rules through out their whole lives.
