Term:
Number Strategies Number & Algebra
- LEVEL 2: Use simple additive strategies with whole numbers
and fractions.

Number Knowledge Number & Algebra

- LEVEL 2: Know FNWS & BNWS with whole numbers to at
least 1000
- Know the basic addition and subtraction facts.
- Know how many 1s, 10s, and 100s are in whole numbers to
at least 1000
- Know simple fractions in everyday use.

Equations and Expressions Number & Algebra

- LEVEL 2: Communicate and interpret simple additive
strategies, using words, diagrams (pictures), and symbols.

STRATEGIES (Key Teaching Ideas) BEING DEVELOPED (Book 5)

STAGE 3:
KEY IDEA 1: Find by practical means halves and quarters of shapes and objects. Develop the idea of a fair or
equal share.
Problem progression: eg half a glass of water, half a piece of apple, a quarter of a sandwich
Share the licorice strap between you and your friend so you have the same amount each.
KEY IDEA 2: Find halves and quarters of sets by equal sharing of objects to 20.
Problem progression: working with numbers less than 20 find half of a set and quarter of a set by one to one equal sharing
Eg: share 6 marbles between 2 people find the answer is 3 by using equipment
STAGE 4:
KEY IDEA 1: Find a fraction of a set/number by sharing out the objects equally moving towards anticipating the
sharing by imaging or
skip-counting using known doubles or halves to help solve the problem. Emphasis on halves, quarters, eights, thirds
and fifths.
Problem progression: of 12, of 14, of 16, 1/8 of 24, 1/3 of 15, 1/5 of 15, of 20, 1/5 of 20
KEY IDEA 2: Share a shape into equal parts by drawing halves, quarters, thirds, fifths.
KEY IDEA 3: Find a fraction of a shape by using fold symmetry to create halves, quarters and eights.

- LEVEL 2: Generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned
in many ways.
- Find rules for the next member in a sequential pattern.

KNOWLEDGE BEING DEVELOPED (Book

4)

Stage 3
Develop common vocabulary for fractions particularly halves
and quarters.
Extend this into eights, and sixteenths to develop understanding
of ths
Know doubles to 10 and halves to 10
Stage 4
