Quadratic Expression Unit

Deadlines: ISN Check on 11/12

Assessment on 11/13, Study Guide and MVP Packets due
We have covered/are going to cover the following topics:
-Vertex Form
-Graphing Quadratic Expressions
-Factoring Trinomials
-Standard Form
-Factored Form
-Key Characteristics of graphed quadratic expressions
For your note taking and studying purpose, make sure you have
complete information:
5.1 Transformations of Quadratic Functions (already completed
1.5 weeks ago)
Objective: Students will transform quadratic functions
Essential Question: What are the benefits of writing the quadratic
function in vertex form?
Factoring Trinomials
Objective: Students will learn/review how to factor quadratic
expressions from a trinomial to binomials
Essential Questions: How do you factor a trinomial?
-video notes
Building the Perfect Square
Objective: Students will use the complete the square method to rewrite
standard form expressions into vertex form
Essential Questions: What are the benefits are rewriting a standard
form expression?
5.4 from the book for notes, make sure you have the following:
Know it Note! Completing the Square
Read Example 4, (copy if necessary) Check it out! 4a and 4b to
see what you still do not understand
Also copy down the Helpful Hint next to Example 4
Additional notes (optional) if needed can be obtained from watching
the Khan Academy videos on Solving Quadratic Equations by
completing the square

Lining Up Quadratics
Objective: Students will connect factored form and standard form of
the quadratic expression
Essential Question: To construct a graph of a unique quadratic function,
how many minimum points do you need and why is the factored form
helpful to accomplish these minimum points needed?
Notes: Define axis of symmetry, vertex, y intercepts, x intercepts of
quadratic function

Reflection: How does the factored form of a quadratic expression tie
together linear and quadratic components? Write your own example
and provide the graphs of the linear components and quadratic
components similar to MVP
Ive Got a Fill In
Objective: Students will tie all three quadratic expressions together,
standard, vertex and factored form and justify the benefits/constraints
of each quadratic expression
Essential Question: What are the benefits/constraints of each quadratic
expression?
Notes we will discuss in class
Reflection: Develop a puzzle piece to demonstrate each type of
quadratic expressions connection to one another.
