Introduction

Garments and Apparel has always been a part of Fashion, garments and textiles has been
playing a very important role in India over the past years, garments made depends on the
climate, culture, weather and the textiles materials, there are different trends of fashion in
different states at different times. Outfits can be made from different types of textiles to suit
different occasions and climate, mostly Indian like using cottons and silk apparels, lately the
fashion trend in India is diverting towards western culture and people prefer to wear western style
outfits. India is the world’s second largest producer of textiles and garments after China. It is
the world’s third largest producer of cotton—after China and the USA—and the second
largest cotton consumer after China.

Fashion is a very broad word, fashion never remains the same over time, over the years Fashion
has always been changing, in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s etc and the Indian fashion scenario wasn‟t
exactly colorless. It was exciting, stylish and very graceful. There were no designers, models, star
or fashion design labels that the country could show off. The value of a garment was judged by
its style and fabric and not by who made it, but today it has very much changed, people are
more interested to know who is the fashion designer or which brand is it, these have now
become the main selling points of Fashion Garments in India today.

The garment and apparel industry involves advertising, designing and selling of fashionable
clothes. Each outfit fabricated has a specific theme, purpose and target market of its own. For
classifying the upcoming trends, apparel world connects with the designers and marketers who
keep track of all the essential requirement of consumers. The art and work related with the
designers is not only restricted with the designing of clothes but also broadens to fashion
accessories like shoes, bags, jewelry and many more. The interest in fashion apparel is on
endless rise; accordingly the concerned opportunities and competition are there.

The Indian Apparel and Garment fashion industry got a big boost by the victories of a
number of Indian beauty queens in International events such as the Miss World and Miss
Universe. Contests such as these made Indian models recognized worldwide. Indian fashion
designers such as Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Rohit Bal, Rina Dhaka, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya and
Manish Malhotra have also made their mark in the global fashion arena.

It‟s been noted that women spend less on trousers and skirts compared to money spent by men on
trousers. With more women coming out to work, the (combined) branded trouser and skirts market
has been increasing at a whopping 27 per cent in sales terms. In India many women now feel
that Western clothing is more suitable, particularly when working or using public
transportation. Many corporate offices are also in favor of their employees wearing Western
wear therefore among working women nowadays western clothing has become the latest trend.

Garment and Textile Fashion Trend in India
Fashion has always been changing from time to time, earlier people were more traditional with
their clothing but know they are more interested in the Western culture, they are following the
Fashion from Europe, people in India who loved to wear traditional clothes are now becoming
more modern in their style. In the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Indian fashion scenario wasn't exactly
colorless. It was exciting, stylish and very graceful. There were no designers, models, star or
fashion design labels that the country could show off. The value of a
garment was judged by its style and fabric and not by who made it. It
was regarded as ever so chic and fashionable to approach any
unfamiliar tailor, who could make a garment for a few rupees,
providing the perfect fit, finish and style. The high society lady, who
wore it, was proud for getting a good bargain and for giving her name
to the end result.

In 60s, tight 'kurtas', 'churidars' and high coiffures were a trend

among ladies. It was an era full of naughtiness and celebration in arts
and music and cinema, manifested by liberation from restriction and
acceptance of new types of materials such as plastic film and coated
polyester fabric.

The 70s witnessed an increase in the export of traditional materials outside the country as well as
within. Hence, international fashion arrived in India much before the music culture with the bold
colors, flower prints and bell-bottoms.

It was in the early 80s when the first fashion stores opened in Mumbai. At that time garments were
retailed for a four-figure price tag. In the '80s people started following western culture it was the
era of self consciousness and American designers like Calvin Klein, these brand became famous.
With the evolution of designer stores in Mumbai, the elegant fashion design culture was a trend
among Indians along with their heavy price tags

In the 90's, the last decade, a move towards the drastic pairing down returned with ethnic wears.
With heavy cut throat competition and sound awareness of the client, the inevitable occurred. The
price tags, which had once reached at a peak, began their downside journey.

In the 90’s Indian Ethnic wears was in Trend

In the 21st century, with new designers and models and some sensible designing; the fashion hype
accelerated its speed. Garments embellishment with bead work is
another area where there was a demand in the International and Indian
Market for Indian clothes. According to a survey, in recent times
Indian women have given up their traditional sari for western
wears like t-shirts, shorts, skirts, jeans etc, these are the latest
fashion trend as they feel more comfortable in skirts and trousers
instead of saris and salwar kameez. Even Indian men are moving
towards western styles and they now prefer to wear T-shirts,
Jackets, Jeans etc. Some of them still prefer the traditional Indian
Jacket as shown below.
