The Data Exploration Project

People from all over the city of Austin, Round Rock and other areas go to Stephen F.
Austin High School. So for my project I asked various people how many miles it was from their
house to school on Google Maps. I think it is important to see the distribution of students and
how far they have to commute every day to get to and from school. This data is quantitative,
meaning that the data collected does not fit into a category but rather is a numerical value. The
values represent the numbers of people I asked, and the amount of miles from their house to
Stephen F. Austin High School. The population is my friends and fellow peers at school. The
units of the data are the number of people and miles to school. I decided on miles as the unit
since it is more commonly used in America and is more convenient for people to look up than
say kilometers, or feet. I collected my data through convenience sampling. Meaning that I chose
who to ask based on who I thought would most likely respond, and who I had contacts for.
The sample size I took from the population was 30 people. The 5 number summary of the
original data is; the minimum equals 1.1, Q1 is 3.9, the median is 6.65, Q2 is also 6.65, and the
maximum is 13. I found all of these values in my calculator when I entered the data into L1 and
had the calculator do an analysis. The mean of the data is 6.49. I found the mean by adding all of
the values together and dividing the product by the total of values in the set, in this case 30. The
median of the data is 6.65. I found the median of the data by putting all of the data in order from

Bills 2
smallest to largest, and since the values of the set is 30 I found the two middle numbers and
found the average of the two by adding them together and then dividing by two. The range is 1.113. I found the range of data by finding the largest number and the smallest number in the data
and that is the range. The standard deviation is 2.92154305. To find the standard deviation using
my calculator and imputing all of the data into L1 and then had the calculator analyze it and
looked for what the Sx value was. The variance is 8.535413793. To find the variance I squared
the standard deviation. The IQR is 4.7. I found the IQR by subtracting Q3 from Q1 which I
found when entering the data and having the calculator analyze it.
The outliers are any value of data more than 1.5 outside of Q1-Q, or 3.9-8.6. The outliers
of my data are 1.1, 2.4, 10, 11.3, 11.7, and 13.

After adding 100 to each value in the data the sample size is still 30 people. The 5
number summary changed so that the minimum is 101.1, Q1 is 103.9, median is 106.65, Q2 is
also 106.65, and the maximum is 113. The mean of the data is 106.49. The median of the data is
106.65. The range is 101.1 to 113. The standard deviation is 2.92154305. The variance is
8.535413793. The IQR is 4.7. The values of mean, and median are the same as before they just
increased by 100. The standard deviation is the exact same as before 100 was added to the
values.

After increasing the original data by one half the sample size remained 30 people. The 5
number summary changed so that the minimum is 1.65, Q1 is 5.85, median is 9.975, Q2 is also
9.975, and the maximum is 19.5. The mean of the data is 9.735. The median of the data is
9.975.The range is 1.65 to 19.5. The standard deviation is 4.382314575. The variance is
19.20468103. The IQR is 7.05. The mean and median, and standard deviation have increased
from the original since they were increased by half of their value.

Around 6.66% of my data is 5 units above my mean of 6.49. Approximately 66.66% of

my data is between three units below my mean and two units above my mean. The number of
units required for the top 10 percent is 3 since there are thirty values. The top ten percent for my
data would be 13, 11.7, and 11.3, since those are the three greatest values.
It is important to be aware of how far students are driving to get to school in order to
determine where most students are coming from and the type of commute the have to make and
how that might affect them and their families. On average it was about 6.49 miles people have to

Bills 8
travel in order to get to Stephen F. Austin High School. However my sample and survey was
convenience based meaning that the data is extremely biased since I asked people I could easily
contact and get information from. Which means I could have left out a large part of the
population of students in different areas. I collected this type of data because I thought it would
be really interesting to see the range of miles and the averages for the distances people live from
school an how far they have to drive or travel every day.
