GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
2
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this experience?
What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op, etc.) that is
not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from what is already required
of other students?

2. Experience Advisor
Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.
Margaret Reed, PhD
513-556-7054
Margaret.reed@uc.edu
I chose Professor Reed because she is teaching the pre-departure class on the business practices in Mexico and she
is joining the other business students and I on the trip to Queretaro. I contacted her prior to submitting this
proposal and made her aware that I wanted to use the trip as an honors experience. I hope that she will help me
better understand the value of Mexican-American relations and how the business worlds in both countries differ.

3. Connection to Learning Outcomes
List 3 learning outcomes from any thematic area(s). Provide specific activities you plan to engage in to help you make
progress towards the chosen learning outcomes. Describe how you expect each activity to help your progress. Include an
estimated time commitment for those activities.
Global Studies: Summarize the interconnectedness of geography, history, cultural traits and world issues.
o I plan to do research prior to visiting Mexico on the relationship between Mexico and the United States
politically, historically, and professionally. Then, while in Queretaro, I plan to take notes on lectures at
the local university discussing various business practices in Mexico. Finally, I will bring what I learn
back to Cincinnati in order to put together a page on my Honors Portfolio about the differences between
the U.S. and Mexico. I think that doing this will help me see the value of Mexican-American relations.
o Estimated time commitment- 5 hours in pre-trip research, 10 hours of lecture and independent research
while in Mexico, 5 hours putting together portfolio page (Total 20 hours)
Global Studies: Demonstrate an understanding of cultural diversity by acknowledging the impact of their
own identity and the experience of social norms, customs, or beliefs that are different from their own.
o While in Mexico, we are required to stay with a local host family. I hope that this experience will give
me a better grasp of what average life in Queretaro is like and what customs are different and similar to
those of my own life in Cincinnati.
o By reading The Mexico Reader: History, Culture, Politics, I will gain a deeper knowledge of Mexico and
its people, culture, and environment in order to have a better-rounded and informed opinion of Mexico.
o Estimated time commitment- all of the time that I spend with the host family during the one week trip to
Queretaro (At least 30 hours)
Global Studies: Develop practical travel skills that promote safe, stimulating, and productive travel
throughout your life.
o Since this will be my first visit to Mexico and Latin America in general, I will pay attention to the rules
and regulations surrounding travel in this part of the world. I also plan to do research on Mexico and
expand on my Spanish language skills.
o Estimated time commitment- 5 hours of research on Mexico using the resources listed in part 4 of this
proposal, 2 hours weekly until the trip using the language-learning app Duolingo or other Spanish
language resources (At least 30 hours)

List 1-2 academic resources you plan to use to enhance your understanding of the learning outcomes. Explain how each
resource connects to your learning outcome(s) and helps you execute your experience. Please include the title and
author/creator for each resource.
Note: Academic resources are professional works that can be used to assist your understanding of the topic. Some
examples are books, documentaries, videos, or research journals.
The Mexico Reader: History, Culture, Politics
By Gilbert M Joseph and Timothy J. Henderson
-
This book details the history, culture and politics in Mexico, and how the nation has affected international
politics, economics, and culture. A specific chapter of the book is on the modernization on Mexico and the
recent economic growth in the nation.
This book will help me expand on the learning outcome of the interconnectedness of geography, history,
cultural traits and world issues- which will give me a better understanding of Mexican culture and politics
in order to make my trip more meaningful.

5. On-going Reflection
Required Revisions:

6
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
I plan to keep a small journal detailing the events of each day that I am in Mexico that I will use to compile
research and experiences. I will use these journal entries to put on my University Honors Portfolio on return to the
United States after the trip. Some questions that I want to be able to answer while on the trip include:
- What cultural differences exist between my own family in Cincinnati and my host family in Queretaro?
- How does conducting business in Mexico differ from conducting business in the United States?
- What role does Queretaro play in the Mexican economy?
- How do Mexican-American relations impact businesses and business people in Mexico?
- What similarities can be found between the United States and Mexican culture and customs?
I also plan to bring a camera in order to document the trip in photographs that will be later displayed on my
honors portfolio.

Describe how you plan to actively share what youve taken away from this experience with a targeted audience. Explain
why you chose this specific audience.
Note: While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your personal learning portfolio or
social media account(s) does not reach a targeted audience.
-
As previously stated, I plan to share my trip to Queretaro with my fellow honors students on my
University Honors Portfolio website at alexanderrack.weebly.com. I will create a page on the portfolio
that discusses my experience in Mexico and also examining the differences and similarities between
American and Mexican culture.
In addition, I hope to give a short presentation on my trip and on the growth of the Mexican economy
to the Developing and Emerging Nations club, which meets every other week at UC to discuss world
issues involving economics in developing nations in Africa, Central America, and Asia. In this
presentation, I will discuss many of the differences in culture and how they affect business practices in
Mexico, as well as how the development of the Mexican economy affects the world economy and
Mexican-American relations.
