OCTA ACTIVITY ANALYSIS FORM 2: TASK-FOCUSED

NAME: ______________James Brazelle____________ COURSE: OCTA ______1030____

ACTIVITY NAME:
Dream Catcher

DATE: ___03-03-2015______

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
Wrap a hoop and weave a net to make a dream catcher.
Age: 14 and up
Prep time: 20 min
Project time: 60 min

SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT:
Wire hoops
Assorted feathers
Tape
Pony beads
Artificial sinew
Glue

Table cover
Scissors
Ruler

STEPS OF ACTIVITY:
1

Gather materials and measure out amount you

need. 1 wire hoop, 3 ft brown tape, 11 ft waxed
string, 8 beads, 4 feathers

Wrap your wire with the 3 ft of brown tape. Make

sure you cover up all exposed metal. You may use
a dab of glue to secure the beginning. When your
hoop is completely wrapped, dont cut off the
excess tape. You will use this to cover your hanging
loop.

10

As you reach the center you can now adjust the

spacing of your hitch loops along the wire hoop from
round one and pull everything together tightly to
the center.
Tie two overhand knots at the end and cut off the
excess string and keep it aside. You will have a small
circle in the center approximately the size of a
nickel.

Take one end of the 11 foot waxed string and knot

a simple loop 1 inch long from which you will hang
your dream catcher called a hanging loop.
Take this same end of the string and directly below
the loop tie the string with 2 overhand knots to the
hoop where you finished wrapping the tape.

11

Use the extra brown tape to wrap around the

waxed string hanging loop in the same way you
wrapped the hoop.

13

The dream catcher uses the same stitch from start

to finish, called half hitches around the hoop
approximately 1 inch spacing between each hitch.
When this first round around the hoop is complete
you should have 10 stitches going around the
hoop.
On your second round, hitch the string around the
center of each stitch from the previous round. Your
first few rounds will seem loose and messy this is
natural.
Continue stitching towards the center of the hoop,
dont pull the string rounds too tight until the 3 rd or
4th round. Keep in mind the total number of rounds
to the center is 6.

14

12

Take the excess piece of waxed string and cut it in

half, leaving you with approximately two 10 inch
pieces.
One side at a time knot both pieces to the bottom of
your hoop on either side. Tie them on with a larks
head knot so that your have an equal amount of
string on both sides of the knot.
String 2 beads at one end of the string then tie an
overhand knot at the very end, inserting a feather
into the knot. Pull tight. You can add a little glue.
Repeat on the other pieces.

Orientation

Conversation, Values

Room, table, light, 3 x 3 space

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXTS
SOCIAL
10 people at double sized table, 19 in
room

GRADATION
Easier: have someone demonstrate
each step, place contrast behind
white string, use a hoop with
premade loops for the first round.

ADAPTATION
Wear rubber gloves to minimize over
stimulation, use a blunt needle to
thread the string, use clips to hold
the string in place on the hoop.

PHYSICAL

CULTURAL
Mixed gender, inspired by native
American culture.

SAFETY HAZARDS
Scissors. Strangulation with string,
metal hoop.

Harder: Not have any pictures

demonstrating, not having premade
model, have them fabricate a hoop.

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION FOR THIS ACTIVITY

This is a very high level activity and could be a nice inspiration to hang in the persons environment.
