OCTA 1020 MOVEMENT LAB ANALYSIS

James Brazelle

Students will complete the attached chart on a variety of age groups. Write down
your observations
in the Movement Laboratory Chart (Appendix A) for each age group and save it to compare
to other movement observations. Turn in typed charts

Early Phase of Movement

(Describe the initial postural
set and the changes that
occur early in the movement
pattern.)

Middle Phase of Movement

(Typically, this is the period
where most position change
occurs)

Terminal Phase of Movement

(As the movement
approaches its conclusion,
how does the person adjust
and what is the final postural
set?

lying down to sitting up:

The subject starts in a
lying supine position with
legs fully extended and
arms resting by her side
palms down. As she
begins the process of
sitting up she lifts her
head and right arm first
flexing both neck and arm.

lying down to sitting up:

As she continues she
twists to the left with the
right arm and torso. Her
left knee flexes slightly
and left hip flexes slightly
as well. She at this point
places elbow down
extending her right
shoulder to push up while
flexing at the torso and
hip. She straightens the
right arm reaching forward
while putting down the left
hand.

lying down to sitting up:

From here she finishes
extending with the left
arm and flexes her hips
the rest of the way to
sitting position with the
knees slightly flexed and
legs out in front of her
resting her hands on her
knees.

sit to stand from chair:

the subject starts from the
seated position with hips
flexed at around 90
degrees and feet flat on
the floor with hands
resting in lap.
sit to stand from floor:
The subject starts from
sitting with legs in front of
her with knees flexed at
around 50 degrees and
arms resting on knees. To
begin standing she
hyperextends her left arm
back and places her hand
on the floor behind her.

sit to stand from chair:

The subject flexes her
knees sliding her feet
back a few inches.
Pressing her heels down in
one motion she very
slightly flexes her torso
forward and extends her
hips and knees bringing
her straight up.
sit to stand from floor:
from this position she

sit to stand from chair:

As she finishes extending
through the hips and
knees there is a light
extension through the
torso.
sit to stand from floor: In
one motion she extends
the left hip and knee and
the left hand leaves the
floor as she rises higher.
She places the left foot
next to the right one. Both
legs are flexed at the knee
and hip. She is leaning
forward. She extends
through the knee and hips

walking: As she starts

walking there is a slight
lean forward to increase
momentum.

flexes her right hip and

keeps this foot on the
ground and rests her right
arm on this same knee.
Next she externally
rotates the left hip and
flexes the left knee to
bring the left foot under
the right leg. From here
she twists to the left and
extends her left hip down
resting weight on this left
knee. From here she flexes
the right hip to bring the
right foot flat on the floor
in a lunge position with
the left hand still on the
floor. She braces her
weight by placing the right
hand on the right knee.
walking: during walking
there is heel strike with
lead foot, rolling onto back
toe, lateral sway of hips,
twist of torso and full
swing of arms.

until straight.
walking: At termination
of waking there is a sway
forward and a correction
of balance.
