Common Lesson Plan

Teacher: Miss Hepper

Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Subject: Reading and Literature
Common Core/State Standard(s):
RL. 3.3 - Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their
actions contribute to the sequence of events

Planning

Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to recall and describe their favorite character from the story
and present their character to the class. They will also be able to speak in front of their peers and also listen
to their peers present.
Describe how this lesson is developmentally appropriate:
What skills and content are needed to master the lesson objective(s)?
- Students will be required to read along with the given story, write down and describe their
favorite character using adjectives, and present their character to the class.
How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world?
- The students may choose the character they feel they relate to the most and they will be
able to apply text to self and text to world.
What types of instructional strategies will you use to deliver the content?
-Instructional strategies I will use to deliver the content and carry on this lesson plan will be
oral sharing on a related topic, brainstorming, and note taking.
How does your lesson reflect educational theories/theorists?
-This lesson will reflect the theory of Piaget by having the students, who would be in the
concrete operational stage, classify what type of character they chose by describing that
character and comparing it to the characters the other students chose. For example, some
students may choose more of a funny character, or a mean character.

Pre-Assessment
How will you measure students readiness/level of understanding prior to teaching this lesson?
(e.g., KWL chart, SMARTboard responder quiz, whole-class Q&A with response cards,
individual student pre-test, etc.).
I will pre-assess my students readiness/level of understanding prior to teaching this lesson by making
a pre-test for the students to take that will have multiple choice questions with different questions
regarding adjectives. For example I will have one question that definition of an adjective along with
definitions of verbs, nouns, etc. and have the students circle the correct definition. Some other
questions I would have would include circling the word out of the four words that is an adjective, or
have the students come up with a synonym for different adjectives.
Assessment
How will the students demonstrate that they have attained the goals of the lesson?
Explain how the assessment aligns to the objective.
Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
Provide exemplar student responses/products (model outcome).
I will assess the students of their understanding of adjectives when I have them present the
character they chose to the class. I will watch for the adjectives they use and make sure what
they are saying about the character makes sense and I will check to see how they describe the

character and what words they use.

Post-Assessment
How will you evaluate the students work/performance? ( e.g., rubric, weighted responses,
checklist)
Report results in qualitative and/or quantitative format.
In order to post-assess my students, I will have them fill out a sheet with the different characters that
the other students, and themselves, chose and list at least three different adjectives that can be used to
describe that character. This will check to make sure that they were listening to the other students, in
which class participation will be a part of their grade, and also that they understood what each
character was like. This will give me a chance to see if they use correct words that are adjectives as
well.

Key Vocabulary:
List words that you will either introduce or
review which build background/schema relevant
to the content area.
- Adjective
- Character
- Traits
- Characteristics

Technology needed:
How will you use technology to engage
students in authentic learning
experiences?
How will you address diverse learning
needs through technology?
-Some technology materials I will use
will be that SmartBoard that will play a
short video about adjectives. I will also
use the SmartBoard to pull up a picture of
the character that is being described when
the students are presenting to help them
understand what character is being
described. They will also be able to use
the picture to find more adjectives for the
character.
Other required materials:
I will need paper for the pre-tests, the students
will use notebook paper to brainstorm and come
up with words to describe their character, they
will need a pencil to write with, the story that we
will be reading to follow along with, and I will
also need a sheet with a chart on it for the
students to use for the post-assessment.

Accommodations:
What accommodations/modifications will you include for specific students during each phase
of the lesson? (remediation and enrichment levels)
Input
Guided Practice
Independent Practice

We Do

I Do

Lesson Opening:
How will you
activate student interest?
present the learning objective(s) in an engaging and student-friendly way?
make connections to past learning?
convey the importance of the learning objective and make it relevant to your students
lives?
explain to students the sequence of instruction? (preview the activities for the period)
communicate what knowledge or skills students will be expected to produce by the
close of the lesson?
In order to activate student interest I will start the lesson by reading a quick paragraph that is very
generic and doesnt really have any adjectives in it. I will ask the students what they thought of the
paragraph and ask them if they thought it was very exciting. Then I will read a paragraph that has a
ton of adjectives in it and ask them what they thought of that paragraph to show them the importance
of adjectives. I will then ask them what the first paragraph was missing and see if they will answer
adjectives. I will then ask them if they feel that adjectives are important and proceed to tell them that
they will be describing their favorite character from the book we read earlier that day and present it to
the class. I will stress the importance of adjectives and tell them they have a better understanding at
the end of the lesson.
Instructional Input
How will you model/explain/demonstrate all knowledge and skills required of the
objective?
Restate the objective
Guided Practice
How will students practice, with your support, all content and skills required to continue
to internalize the objective? (How will students be engaged?)
How will you ensure that all students have multiple opportunities to practice new
Independent Practice
How will you clearly state and model academic and behavioral expectations?
How will students independently practice the knowledge and skills required by the
objective?
Lesson Closing
How will you
Review the skills/content taught in an interactive manner (whole/small group,
individually)
Reemphasize and clarify the objective
Reassess students mastery of, or progress toward the objective? (if not already
assessed)
To finish the lesson I will have the students fill out a chart/worksheet with the different characters
listed and have them describe each character using the words that the other students used. From this
sheet I will be able to review the skills taught and check to make sure they understood the concept of
the lesson taught as well.

Lesson Plan Implementation

Assessment
Some accommodations/modificiations that I will need would be a sound system for a student who
may not be able to hear as well, have students who cant see or hear as well seated up front in the
room, and I will also have a way to magnify the worksheets and story book for students who may
need it.

Analyze
Reflect

After you have administered your assessments (formal or informal) for this lesson, analyze the
results.
How did the students perform on this assessment? To what degree did they achieve
mastery toward the lesson objective(s)?
How
will you provide
opportunities
and extension?
Reflect on your
effectiveness
as a teacher
based on for
the remediation
analysis of students
performance.
List two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction.
Describe the changes you would make if you were to teach this lesson again.
