Common Lesson Plan

Teacher: Leann Schlotterback

Grade Level: 2nd Grade
Subject: Language Arts
Common Core/State Standard(s):
L.2.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases
based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
D. Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of
compound words.

Planning

Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to comprehend how compound words are
formed and their meanings by showing examples of putting compound words together and
explaining what they do 4 out of 5 times.

Describe how this lesson is developmentally appropriate:

Students will need to know prior knowledge of compound words and know how to
form words and their meanings.
Students will either see these words later on and/or use them for a project
possibly.
There will be a lecture to inform/remind students of compound words and
application to show them how to use it effectively.
Vygotsky talks about Zone of Proximal Development and how with interacting
with others this can help their learning and their performance. So by children
working together, after they have gotten the information from the teacher, this
helps them work together and learn from one another and not just the teacher.
Pre-Assessment
I will give students a worksheet that has different types of words on it. Some will
be compound words and some will not. They will then need to go through and
mark/circle the words that are compound words to the best of their ability.
Assessment
Students will demonstrate that they understand the lesson by getting in groups
and working together to form at least 5 different compound words. They will have
to get up and explain how they formed the compound word and what its new
meaning is compared to the two old separate meanings.
Post-Assessment
I will evaluate students work and understanding by checking off on my list that
they each can correctly make and explain what a compound word is and the
steps to making it.

Lesson Opening:
I will ask students to each right down two of their favorite things to do. This can
be a sport or activity, anything. Then I will ask students to try and put those two
words together. Then I will ask if anyone wants to share their combined word.
Some of the examples might be compound words and if they are I will point them
out and explain why they work. The other examples that do not work will be
pointed out and explained why they do not work as a compound word.

make a new word with a new meaning.
I am going to have students come up to the Smart Board and pair together
one example of a compound word.
While they are up at the board the will also explain why they picked it and its

meaning.Practice
For individual practice students will get into groups of 2 to 3 students.
In each of their groups they will need to produce 6 of their own compound
words.
Lesson Closing
Explain to the students that they cannot use the examples that we went
I will give students the same worksheet that was given to them at the beginning
of the lesson.
Then I will compare students progress from this time to the last time.

Lesson Plan Implementation

Accommodations:
I will refer to the IEP recommendations.

After you have administered your assessments (formal or informal) for this lesson,
analyze the results.
How did the students perform on this assessment? To what degree did they
achieve mastery toward the lesson objective(s)?
How will you provide opportunities for remediation and extension?
I thought that my last presentation of my lesson plan went okay. There were some
things that I thought I did well like slowly going through example and using my teacher
voice to entice the students. I also thought that my anchor chart was a good
presentation of the concept. Some things that I changed was my activity and I am now
using it with technology and presenting it in a way that students see examples and
