The topic is what the article is about. The topic can be anything the author
wants to write about.

Authors Purpose
The authors purpose is why the author is writing. Here are some
of the reasons:
Words to Know
describe
entertain
inform
persuade
purpose

Write to Persuade
The authors purpose is to persuade you to do something or to believe
something. For example, advertisements, TV commercials, and book reviews are
written mainly to persuade.
Write to Describe
The authors purpose is to help you see or experience some place or thing
or person. For example, character sketches and travel articles about special
places are written mainly to describe.
Write to Entertain
The authors purpose is for you to enjoy the writing. For example, anecdotes, or
little stories about real people, are often written to entertain.
Authors write for different reasons. Two writers can write about the same topic
but have different purposes.

Authors may have other purposes for writing as well. For example, suppose the
authors main purpose is to give information about what bears eat. The author
may also want readers to recognize that bears in the wild are just thatwild
animals, not pets.

Preview the article before you read. Look at the title. Look at any special
graphics. Glance through the article to get an idea of what it is about. This
will help you identify the authors purpose.

There is a mystery in the rain forest in northeastern Australia. To find it, enter
the forest at the edge of the grounds at OReilly Park. Feel like youre walking into
a dark movie theater? Let your eyes adjust to the low light. The thick treetops in
the rain forest form a gigantic umbrella called a canopy. The ground stays damp
because sunlight never gets in to dry it out. Notice how quiet it is as you move
around? The moist earth and leaves are absorbing the sound of your footsteps.
Walk over to the clearing up ahead where more light is coming in. Whats this
scattered on the ground? Flowers, jewelry, feathers, pebbles . . . and theyre all the
same shade of blue! Who has left this treasure on the forest floor?
Hey, what was that? Up abovedid you just see something wing past and skim
over the garden of blue? Look! There on that mossy stumpits a bird no bigger
than a pigeon carrying a blue plastic cup. Step back into the shadows and watch
what he does next.
So, the mystery is solved. This bird, a male satin bowerbird, is the designer of the
blue display. Right now he seems very satisfied with it. Just listen to him sing as he
struts around!
Whos this flying in? A lady satin bowerbird has just arrived. Shes the reason for
all the male birds hard work. If his display pleases her, hell have a wife. The mound
of leaves and twigs next to the males blue treasures is his home or bower. If the
female bird is truly impressed, shell hop inside and say I do. Keep your fingers
crossed for this little guy.
She certainly is taking her time checking out the goods. It looks as if she really goes
for all his glass beads. Shes making her way toward the door of his bower. It looks like
shes going to go inside. Oh, wait a minuteshes turning to take a last look at the bounty.
Something catches her eye, and she flits back out to the blue goodies. Oh, too bad.
She changes her mind and flies away. Poor satin bowerbird. Hell have to try again.

Coin banks werent always made to look like pigs. In fact, the
name piggy bank may have come from a kind of clay and not
from the animal at all.

decorated with a pig. The pig was a valuable farm animal in many
countries. It was a symbol of wealth and good fortune.

These early clay banks were fragile and easily broken. As time
passed, mining became less expensive. Iron, copper, pewter, and
silver gradually replaced pygg clay in the production of household
items. Although pygg clay lost its popularity, the habit of saving
pennies did not. Today people make piggy banks from every
material imaginable. These include gold, silver, glass, wood,
pottery, and plastic.
