PROGRAM RATIONALE (please review the Program Guidelines for directions):
The program of study above reflects my interests in quantitative research as well
as my professional goal to work in higher education administration. As I have
mentioned in my personal essay, my long-term career goal is to work within the
academic advising field while also contributing to the advancement of the field through
research. This will require both administrative knowledge and understanding of higher
education administration including organizational theory, current issues in the field,
leadership in higher education, and financial management. My final course for my
professional specialization in higher education will be CTCH 624, Financial
Management in Higher Education, or, depending on the recommendations of the
committee, a directed readings course to bolster my knowledge of advising, the tools
used to assess advising, existing data on advising and theory related to advising and
student development.
In order to prepare myself for contributing to the academic advising literature, I
have used my time in the program to gain quantitative research skills by taking
advanced methods courses (EDRS 821 and EDRS 830). In my final semester of
coursework, I will continue pursuing a deeper understanding of multiple regression
techniques by taking Hierarchical Linear Modeling (EDRS 830). Administrators within
higher education are consistently asked to focus on increasing graduation and
retention rates. While I see this focus as somewhat misguided, it is impossible to
ignore, and it will be important for me to be able to understand how different variables
impact these measures and how to disaggregate data to more clearly and accurately
tell the story of my institution. This will be important both for reporting purposes and for
informing my practice.
