HYDROSTATICS

APPARENT WEIGHT

Buoyant Force
A completely submerged body displaces a volume of liquid equal to its own volume. The buoyant force equals the weight of the fluid displaced.
When an object weights less than the total volume of fluid it can displace, it will settle down until the buoyant force equals the weight and it floats partially submerged.

Fb = mg = (V)l g, where Vl = Vo
When a body float in a fluid, the magnitude Fb of the buoyant force
on the body is equal to the magnitude of the gravitational force on the
body (ie object`s weight)

W = mg Fb, or W = W - Fb
For floating object, W = Fb
Hence , W = 0

The U-tube is filled with water and unmixed oil, as shown in the
figure. If the density of water is 1000 kg m-3 , determine the density
of an oil.

PROBLEM:
A block of density ,0 = 800 kg/m-3 floats face down
in a fluid of density 1200 kg/m3 . The block has
height H = 6.0 cm.
(a) By what depth h is the block submerged?
(b) If the block is held fully submerged ,
