Cinder Satellites Fielding a well-balanced squad, five deep in almost every event, the Rough Rider track team proved to be one of the powers in Southern League competi A large turn-out of new and outstanding tenth graders, as well as the return of many varsity and Bee lettermen, enabled Coaches Coultas and Nash to produce a great team and was the chief reason for the good showing of the cindermen in the toughest league in the city. Outstanding men developed were Sam Soto, cone of the best quarter-milers in Roosevelt history, shotputters Harry Varteresian, who broke the school record against Fremont with a mighty 52’ 73/4” heave, and dependable Sid Cohen; half-miler Sam Gallina; Nick Halapoff, one of the city’s better pole vaulters; milers Manuel Contreras, Carlos Salazar and Frank Frederico, who placed ahead of all competition except L.A/’s Ralph Gold and ran within inches of one another; sprinters Pantele Zanthos, Hal Siegel and Mike Gurrola, highjumpers Norm Shivers and Leon Abramovitz; and broadjumper Willie Goldberg and George Castruita, both of whom nearly hit 22".
