STANDARD:
3.2.3.A1. Differentiate between the three states of matter, classifying a substance as a
solid, liquid, or gas.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 3rd grade students will be able to describe how water freezes and understand the
concept of a liquid turning into a solid.
II. Instructional Materials
Explore Solids and Liquids book
Guided notes worksheet
Cups
Popsicle sticks
Water
Milk
Juice
Soda
Freezer
Observation sheet
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Observation skills
2. Fine motor skills

B. Key Vocabulary
1. Liquid: A form of matter that has no definite shape, flows
easily, and is neither a solid or gas.
2. Solid: A form of matter that has a definite shape or form that
can be measured in length, width, and height; not like a liquid
or gas.
3. Matter: A physical substance that occupies space.
C. Big Idea
1. How does a liquid become frozen?
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will ask students how they think something becomes
frozen.
2. Activity about rates at which liquids freeze will be introduced
to students and started.
3. Class will be split into four groups and each will be testing the
freezing rate of a different liquid.
4. Student will pour their liquids and place a popsicle stick in the
cup and put it in the freezer.
B. Development
1. Students will receive guided note sheet based off the book that
will be read and they will receive and observation sheet for the
activity which also contains questions.
2. Teacher will read students a section from the book, Explore
Solids and Liquids, that is about how a liquid turns into a
solid.
3. Teacher will stop reading every 10 minutes.
4. During those pauses the students will check on their cups of
liquid in the freezer.
5. Students will record their observations.
6. Once the book is finished students will check and record status
on liquids again.
7. Teacher will ask the students to share what things they already
know that are frozen or can freeze and again explain the
process of how a liquid turns to a solid.
8. Students will check liquids again and record observations.

C. Closure
1. They teacher will explain that during the week the students will
learn a lot of different things about the process of freezing and
will do some experimenting on how liquids freeze.
2. Students will check their liquids one last time and record their
status.
3. Students will share with the class their findings at the different
times they checked the liquids and we will determine which
freezes the fastest.
4. Questions on the observation sheets will be completed and be
collected as a form of assessment.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. To accommodate Billy, a student with a learning disability, he
will be seated at the front of the room and have more detailed
outlined notes and given more time on the test at the end of the
unit.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
Teacher will collect the students observations sheets from the activity.
2. Summative
There will be a final test at the end of the unit.

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
What could be added to this lesson to improve it?
What is another way to assess the students learning?
