I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 3rd grade students will be able to describe how a snowflake forms and understand that
no two snowflakes are alike.
II. Instructional Materials
Youtube video on snowflakes
Guided notes paper
Plain white printer paper
Scissors
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills

B. Key Vocabulary
1. Freezing: The act or process of changing from a liquid to a
solid through cold temperatures
2. Particles: A minute portion of matter
3. Temperature: The degree or intensity of heat present in a
substance or object, especially as expressed according to a
comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived
by touch.

C. Big Idea
1. No two snowflakes are the same
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will take about how last class we learned how water
freezes
2. Teacher will then describe how todays lesson will be about
snowflakes
B. Development
1. The teacher will show a short video that explains how
snowflakes form
2. Students will fill out the guided notes sheet while watching the
video.
3. The answers to the guided notes sheet will be discussed out
loud.
4. The teacher will then ask students if they think it is true that no
two snowflakes look alike.
5. The teacher will then explain the activity, which is making
paper snowflakes.
6. The teacher will demonstrate how to make the snowflake as
students follow along.
7. They teacher will go around the room helping students as
needed.
8. Once every ones snow flake is completed they will all be hung
up around the room.
C. Closure
1. The students will be taken outside to play freeze tag for the last
15-10 minutes.
2. The students will be asked again if they think snowflakes can
be the same.
3. Students will be given a short quiz on snowflakes that will be
collected to assess what they learned.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. To accommodate Billy, a student with a learning disability, he
will be seated at the front of the room and have less blanks to
fill in on his guided notes and given more time on the quiz at
the end of class.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
Teacher will observe during the game of freeze tag and later give them a quick
pop quiz that will be collected at the end of class.
2. Summative
There will be a final test at the end of the unit.
