Marine Corps 240th Birthday

I would like to send out a Happy Birthday and Semper Fi to all of my Marine compatriots.
Nov. 10 is the official birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marine Corps traces its roots back to the
Second Continental Congress in 1775, which established a resolution stating that "two Battalions of
Marines be raised" as forces to land with the fleet. The Marines were on hand for the first amphibious raid
into the Bahamas in 1776 under the command of Capt. Samuel Nichols. The Marine Corps marks the
occasion with an annual Birthday Ball, the reading of a birthday message from the Commandant and the
cutting of a birthday cake.
Latin for "Always Faithful," Semper Fidelis became the Marine Corps motto in 1883. According to the
Marine Corps, Semper Fidelis is a permanent reminder that "a Marine will forever live by the ethics and
values of the Corps."
Thank you all for your service.

Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a public holiday that is dedicated to honoring anyone who has served in the United States
military. The holiday began as a day to remember the end of World War I and was declared a holiday by

President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday became Veterans Day
in 1954.
Most federal workers are given the day off and there is no mail service in the United States on this day.
Federal workers who are required to work during the holiday are often given additional compensation as a
benefit.
When Woodrow Wilson declared 11 November a holiday, the primary intention was to have a day to
reflect on the sacrifices of those who had served in the military during World War I. Observation of the
holiday through parades and meetings was envisioned.
Today, many Americans observe the day by attending ceremonies and parades that are dedicated to
honoring the troops for their service. These often allow veterans to speak about their time in the service
and give Americans the opportunity to personally thank veterans for their sacrifice.
There are many discounts for veterans on this day and I will post a few to the website in a couple of hours.
If anyone else has some discounts available please send them to me at ExcecutiveDirector@amvetsin.org and I will include them on the website.

a presentation at the War Memorial around 11:00am with the parade shortly after. If anyone has the exact

Membership
As most everyone knows by now today is the start of our new 2016 membership year. The membership
report on the Department website now should reflect the new numbers for the upcoming year. If you find
any errors please let me know right away so they can be corrected.
The membership cards are in and will be distributed at the Fall Conference coming up on September 18 20th at the Clarion Waterfront Hotel. The cards for any post not represented will be given to the District
Commander and you will have to make arrangements to get them at a later date.
We really need to work on membership this year. The Department would like to see 100% across the
board. It is not very difficult with a little proactive effort on your part. Go after those members who are not
renewing and find out why. Also you can go after those members on the MAL list who live nearby and try

getting them to transfer to your post.District Officers need to be lending a lot of support to your posts.
That's what your here for.
It can be done!
