Interview skill exam 1.

1. Define empathy. How does its use enhance client disclosure? Provide a sentence
example of empathy being used in a question/response.
2. What are empathic failures? Provide a sentence example of an in-effective use of
empathy.
3. What are furthering teqs? Provide examples of two in the form of a sentence
Q&A.
4. What are some barriers in a given interview? Name 4. Then, choose one and
describe how you would overcome the obstacle to achieve an effective interview.
5. What are some non-verbal cues and communication patterns at play in an
interview between interviewer and interviewee? What are the value of these. How
might they also be a barrier to client disclosure?
6. What is an accent response? How might its use be effective in an interview?
7. Define clinical repose
8. Define authentic responses. What are their value and risks in an interview?
Provide an example in a 1 sentence Q&A.
9. How may a person in an interview use metaphor in disclosures? Give an example
of a metaphor you may have heard, or use in professional or personal
communication.
Each question above is worth 2 points and can be answered in about 1 or 2
sentences.
Undergrad students:
Reveal, in a -1 page response, an interview in your life that was either good, or
bad. What made it so? What could have been different to achieve a better (if bad),
interview outcome? Worth 5 points.

Graduate students:
Consult the end of chapters 1-5 in course text (Murphy and Dillon), and you will find
a series of essay questions. Choose two total from any of these five chapters and
author a response. Worth 10 points each.
I will send, in separate attachment an actual MHA narrative on a long term client.
Read it. Then, create a script, displaying the questions you might have asked him to
garner the information you see in narrative. In retrospect, speculate as to the

question to derive this information. Display your question and (most vial) the
interview teq you are using. Choose any part of the narrative and come up with 1012 questions with teq you are using for that question (you may use same teq for
several questions).
