Subject or Topic: Rainbows

40 min Grade Level

Section

STANDARD: Standard - 3.2.4.B5:

Demonstrate how vibrating objects make sound and sound can make things vibrate.
Demonstrate how light can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed by an object.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 3rd grade students will be able to recognize how refraction of light can create a
rainbow by creating their own rainbows.
The 3rd grade students will be able to name all seven colors of the rainbow.
II. Instructional Materials
Clear glass cup or bowl
Water
Mirror
Flashlight
Dark room
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Observation skills
2. Fine more skills
3. Knowledge of light refraction
B. Key Vocabulary
Light- the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.
Refraction- bending of light rays as they pass from one material to another.
Rainbow- is an optical phenomenon that appears as a band of colors in an arc,
resulting from the refraction of the sun's light rays by the rain. When the sun
shines on the droplets of water in the atmosphere, a rainbow, as people see it,
is formed.

C. Big Idea
1. How is a rainbow formed? How does it relate to refraction?
D. Additional content
1. Discovery Investigation
2. Recording Data
3. Making Observations
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will review with students what is refraction and
reflection of light by verbally asking students.
2. Teacher will show display a picture on the board and ask
students to write down as many things as possible they see,
keeping in mind that one of those things is the main idea of the
lesson today.
3. After students say things theyve named, teacher will ask what
they think is the subject of our lesson, which is the rainbow.
B. Development
1. Teacher will ask students what the colors of the rainbow are
and write their answers on the board.( Red, Orange, Yellow,
Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).
2. Teacher will write the letters R.O.Y. G. B. I.V on the board to
help remind students of the colors.
3. Teacher will go over handout with students on what makes a
rainbow. (See attached)
4. Teacher will say, now that we know the colors of the rainbow,
lets make our own. and hand out experiment instructions.
(See attached)
5. Students will complete experiment of making their own
rainbow and complete hand out packet. This will be done in
groups of 4 with the other students they sit with. (See attached)
(To be collected)
6. Students will compare their findings with the class.
7. Students will create a poster with one other student in class,
chosen by them. This poster will need to
a. Show each of the colors of the rainbow
b. How a rainbow forms water, light, refraction.
(Rubric Attached) This will be collected and graded as a
Performance Objective.
C. Closure
1. Students will rate how well they understand todays lesson on a
scale of 1 to 5 by raising up their fingers. 1 is being lost on
subject, with 5 being an expert.
2. Teacher will verbally review with students
a. What is light and how it travels?

b. How is a shadow made?

c. What is reflection vs. refraction
d. How is a rainbow made?
3. Teacher will hand out study guide for test the next day.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. Oliver, a 3rd grader with ADHD will be accommodated by working with
other students and doing a hands on activity.
2. Detailed instruction will be given to all students.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
a. Teacher will collect hand out of experiment to make sure
student drew the right conclusions.
2. Summative
a. Students will take a unit test reviewing all of the sections of
the unit. (See Attached)

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
