1.

A 2.00 kg block is attached to an ideal spring with force constant 300 N/m. At t = 0,
the spring is neither stretched nor compressed and the block is moving in the negative
direction at 12.0 m/s. Find;
(a)

Angular frequency of the motion.

(b)

Phase angle and amplitude.

(c)

Write the general equation of displacement, velocity, and acceleration for this
oscillation.

(d)

2.

3.

From (c), draw all the oscillation graphs with respected to time t.

An 80 g mass, connected to a light spring of force constant 30 N/m, oscillate on a

horizontal surface with an amplitude of 5 cm. Friction is negligible. Find:
(a)

the total energy of the oscillating system

(b)

speed of the mass when the displacement is 2 cm.

(c)

when the displacement is 4 cm, find the kinetic energy and the potential
energy.

A 30 g mass is suspended by a vertical spring whose force constant is 15 N/m.

(a)

Determine to four significant figures the natural frequency of oscillation of the

mass.

(b)

The mass is now immerse in a liquid that provides a damping coefficient of

70 g/s for the oscillating system. Find to four significant figures the frequency
of the damped oscillation.

(c)

What time is required for the amplitude of the oscillation to be reduced to onefifth of its initial value.

4.

A sinusoidal waves travel as the following equation; y 1.27 sin x 340t

in SI units. Find;
(a)

Amplitude.

(b)

Frequency.

(c)

Wavelength.

(d)

Speed of the wave.

5.

A rope 8 m long has a total mass of 500 g. The rope is stretched by tighting one end to
the ceiling and putting a block with a mass of 44 kg at the other end. Find the speed of
transverse waves on this rope.

6.

A piano wire with mass 3.00 g and length 80.0 cm is stretch with a tension of 25 N. A
wave with frequency 120 Hz and amplitude 1.6 mm travels along the wire.
(a)

Calculate the average power carried by the wave.

(b)

What happens to the average power if the wave amplitude is halved?
