disability?
A disorder in one or more of
the basic psychological
processes involved in
understanding or in using
language, spoken or written,
which may manifest itself in
imperfect ability to listen,
think, speak, read, write,
spell, or do math calculations

Legal Rights of College Students with


Learning Disabilities
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (Title II)
prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability for
post-secondary schools that receive federal funding.
Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act covers
private colleges and vocational schools.

Disability Service Office Responsibilities


Assess students' requests for accommodations and
auxiliary aids
Provide information regarding rights, policies, procedures
and responsibilities of students with disabilities
Recommend appropriate learning and testing
accommodations for the Individual Student Profile
document
Ensure confidentiality of all information

Assist student with communicating to faculty

A quiet place to take a test with a proctor
Extended time on tests
Extended time to complete homework and reading
Class notes in advance
Auxiliary Aids
Audio books/kindle books (digital voice)
Text to speech software (Dragon Speak)
Modifications
Reduce amount of reading (if possible)
Reduce the length of written tasks

Student Responsibilities
Self-identify as a person with a disability to the disability service
office at the college or university
Provide up-to date, three years or less, documentation of the
disability to the disability service office
Request academic accommodations or auxiliary aids that insure
access to participate in the education program or activity
Self-identify to faculty as a student with a disability and provide a
copy of the Individual Student Profile developed with the disability
service office
Remind faculty in a timely manner of academic accommodations
required for tests and assignments
Accept responsibility for learning, which includes maintaining
grades, attending classes, completing assignments, behaving
appropriately, and communicating frequently with the disability office
about specific needs

Faculty Responsibilities
Allow students to disclose their disabilities in an
appropriate and confidential place

Acknowledge the rights of students with dignity and respect


Maintain integrity of academic standards
Maintain student confidentiality
Provide reasonable instructional and/or testing
accommodations
