Elderly People and the social problems that they have.

Research Question
Which are the social factors that affect in the abandon of the elderly people in geriatric
homes in Cundinamarca, based on the studies realized in the Geriatric Home San Pedro Claver?

Introduction
This project is focused in the investigation on the social problematics that at present
impressing this one in a negative way to the well-being of the elderly people in situations of
abandon, vulnerability and of long poverty.
With this investigation we are trying to identify the reasons and motivations for which the
society forgot or only works a little for elderly people. Colombia has some specialized centers
for helping the problematic, some are private places for people who can paid for their services,
and the other one are publics, financed by the government.
One of them is the center Hogar Geritrico San Pedro Claver in Bogot, there the
Univeristy Unimonserrate have an agreement; this is the reason because we are going to take the
information from them.
Inside the Geriatric San Pedro Claver, they work to realize a series of activities and
procedures by the aim to represent the needs and lacks with which they come to this institution,
how are individual and familiar attention, clinical history, plan for attention and studies of each
case.
We decided to work in this topic because we consider that the elderly people are the most
unprotected by the government in general, they dont have people who likes to defend their
rights.

Objectives
General Objective
To identify the social factors that affect in the abandon of the elderly people in geriatric
homes in Cundinamarca, based on the studies realized in the Geriatric Home San Pedro Claver.

Specifics Objectives

To investigate the social factors (economic, relatives and health) that affect

in the abandon of the elderly people, in the geriatric homes.

To know the work that is realized in geriatric homes in order to improve

the situation of the elderly people and their families.

Conceptual Framework

Elderly People:
Paraphrasing Erick Erickson it is the last stage of the vital cycle of the human being who
goes from 60 years of age up to the death. In this one the elderly people presents big physical and
gradual changes to the detriment of his health, appearance of multiple diseases and conscience of
which one is next the death.

Social Factors:
Social factor are the elements that takes part in the development or the constitution of a
phenomenon, the leading case or necessary condition of an event or change, caused by social
elements, which determine the condition of an activity since are: demographic Trends, sanitary
conditions, supply, nutrition, housing, construction and town planning, education, workforce and
employment, social safety and social defense, between others.

Oriente, Santiago de Cuba Dra. C. Tamara Caballero-Rodrguez. P. 10)

Geriatrics:
It is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to
promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. (Gerontologa
Social, Carmen Delia Snchez Salgado. Editorial Espacio. P. 33)

Gerontology:
It is the study of aging and older adults. The science of gerontology has evolved as
longevity has improved. Researchers in this field are diverse and are trained in areas such as
physiology, social science, psychology, public health, and policy.
(Gerontologa Social, Carmen Delia Snchez Salgado. Editorial Espacio. P. 33)

Abandon:
According to Ruiprez Cantera y LLorente, 2007: The abandon is the not
administration of the medical cares or supervision necessary with regard to the supply, feeding,
hygiene, cover and appropriate medical care according to the age and illnesses. (p. 56)

Functions of the Social Worker

Advocacy
A geriatric social worker is a frontline defense for stopping elderly people abuse: a
geriatric social worker is mandated by law to report to any suspected elderly people abuse to
adult protective services.

Clinical Interventions
The social worker may provide therapy for an elderly client who fells lonely or
who is suffering depression. We can provide to the clients activities to stimulate and help the
people to be busy, making craftwork or recording life stories.

Service Interventions
The social worker is too a link between their clients and the numerous public and
private programs designed for the aging. We can located them to the appropriate services that
they need and can apply.
