Observation 3: Your CTs Methods

What concepts or skills are being developed?

o Lesson on rhetorical prcis what they are, how to write
one and how to use them in rhetorical analysis essays,
used SOAPStone (a concept theyve already been using) to
transition into rhetorical prcis
o Mentions some grammar terms (ex. Appositives,
parallelism) in the context of the regular lesson, and does a
2 minute introduction into the terms within the context of
the broader writing lesson
o Modeling and guided practice combined teacher is writing
a rhetorical prcis on the projector, with student input on
what each sentence/part of sentence should be
How is student progress toward these concepts or skills
evaluated or assessed?
o Please ask me questions as we write this prcis together
because this will be the only time we go over it this
extensively in class before you start using these in your
essays, Talk to me, what are your questions?
o Participation checks for a six weeks grade students get a
check whenever they raise their hand with an answer
Asks students to volunteer parts of the class prcis
checking for understanding
Calls on people who havent participated to give
them the checks and also to check if theyre getting
it
o Is more teacher-centered because she will provide words
and ideas to students if they are struggling with their
contributions
o Bonus question in my brain about grammar, gives
students who arent getting the prcis as well to answer
another type of question
What motivational techniques are seen?
o Its an AP class, so some students are already completed
motivated to answer questions and do their work
o Pacing and giving exact times to do tasks/activities so that
students arent wasting time
o Participation checks are especially effective because its
the last week of the six weeks and students have to have a
certain amount of checks by the end of the six weeks

Observation 3
o Encourages students to give an answer if theyre not sure
its right There are a lot of right answers in English but there are
also a lot of wrong answers, so we sometimes have to go
through a lot of different options, a lot of yall can
contribute
How is technology used?
o PPT for instructions as students come in to class,
information on what they need to turn in before class starts
o Looked up article online and used projector to read it and
have students read along Im Sorry I Bit You During My
Job Interview from mcsweenys.com
o Types class prcis on the projector and leaves class prcis
on the projector for the rest of class when students are
working individually as a visual reminder
How are print materials used?
o Yellow Pages for AP Language 40 pages of different
resources they will need for the class during the year are
used as a reference along with the PPT because they same
info is on both
o Write down the SOAPStone at the beginning before they do
prcis, then write down class prcis and their own
individual prcis after the whole class work
How are learning styles addressed?
o Read article out loud to students with it also on the
projector auditory and visual reading styles
o Asks students to participate and give answers, so they can
learn from their peers and be engaging with the
information theyre learning
o Has prcis on the projector as a visual reminder, also
students see the writing process as the teacher writes the
prcis on the projector as they talk about it
o Builds in time for students to catch up and write down new
information, doesnt ever rush students
o Asks for volunteers, so encourages participatory learning
but also calls on students to get them to check their
understanding
