Origins of this presentation

Recharge the Idiom

Most people that watch H-I-M

enough times notice that there
are lots of mass (or custom
produced) items that have
never ever been shown.

H-I-M is in need of a slight

recharge of its idiom. The
changes are not huge, but
without change H-I-M will not
last.

This document was started with

only Iodine, Sulphur and high
power HF transmitters in mind.

Hundreds of products vital to

the functioning of the modern
world have not been shown!

More and more items kept

coming up, so there is this....

Fill the gaps!

AND : Have more narrators.

The Discovery Networks (in the US)
if it is not careful -- will end up on the
Ash Heap of History due to the
ongoing global economic crisis.
There are too many TV networks in the
English speaking world, and those that
don't actually help their viewers (in any
way) will cease to exist.
Households are dumping Pay TV as a
service, as there is no spare money in
the economic system for it to exist.
Pay TV nets in North America have
economic models based on pure
fantasy and perpetual neverending
copyright is no help to the system.

Origins of this presentation

Most people that watch H-I-M enough times
notice that there are lots of mass (and / or)
custom produced items that have never ever
been shown.
Showing how things are made is an old idiom,
dating to the 1920s. The idiom from the 1940s
to 1960s was everywhere.
In the US this TV idiom was practically
outlawed after 1980. The China Trade
seemed to make it so and the NFB shorts
were about the only way it could ever come
back. This idiom now has to survive a global
economic crisis, and peak resources.

Update the Idiom
Narration is important. Having the
same narrator all the time can lead
a viewer to ignore the program
entirely.
Canada has scores of people skilled
in narration [& in show biz] (& in the
Industrial production of goods) >>>
ALL must do comedy! Drama
people are not a perfect fit...
Keep your current narrators for
about 2/3rds of each episode but
have each guest do 2 full episodes.

Update the Idiom

H-I-M is in need of a slight

Narration is important, but having the same

narrator (or a small set of them) can lead a viewer
to ignore the program entirely.

The changes should not be

huge, but without change H-I-M

Canada has at least dozens of people skilled in

Industrially producing goods).

have been totally ignored!

Keep your current narrators for about 2/3rds of

Have each guest narrator do 2 full episodes of
narration. Keep the best 3 segments. Put the best
one out. Remainders should be WEB XTRAS

Aircraft diesel engines or aero diesels have not
been widely used as an aircraft engines.
Diesel engines were used in airships and were
tried in aircraft in the late 1920s to the 1940s, but
never widely used.
Diesels main advantages are excellent fuel
consumption because of Diesel's higher energy
density.
There are some disadvantages compared to
gasoline or turboprop engines, such as the need to
keep the fuel from gelling at low temperatures.
The rising cost of avgas, and doubts about its
future availability have spurred a resurgence in
aircraft diesel engine production in recent years.

Boxer Flat Engines
(motorcar, motorcycle and aircraft types)
A flat engine is an internal combustion engine with
horizontally-opposed pistons.
Typically, the layout has cylinders arranged in two banks on
either side of a single crankshaft and is otherwise known as
the boxer, or horizontally-opposed engine.
The concept was patented in 1896 by engineer Karl Benz,
who called it the "contra engine."
A boxer engine should not be confused with the opposedpiston engine, in which each cylinder has two pistons but no
cylinder head. Also, if a straight engine is canted 90 degrees
into the horizontal plane, it may be thought of as a "flat
engine", but this usage is not common.
True boxers have each crankpin controlling only one
piston/cylinder while the 180 engines, which superficially
appear very similar, share crankpins.

High Power Shortwave (HF) Transmitters
These XMTRs must be Frequency Agile (5 MHz to
23 MHz) + have output powers of 100 kW to 500
kW. Max power offered : 600 kW
These transmitters must change frequency ~6
times per day to adapt to propagation conditions,
and run for 20 {hr/day} for weeks on end
AUTOMATICALLY.
Very few HF XMTRs of this type are being
commissioned, as most broadcasters are running
on Cold War era transmitters. Most nations that
were HF broadcasters in the 1990s have exited HF
broadcasting : Iraq, Switzerland, Canada, Ecuador,
Russia, but some nations still remain like :
Australia, China, India, NZ, US, ...

Iodine Production (Seaweed)
Iodine was discovered in
Seaweed. The U Montreal
Chemistry Department can do
this process, or maybe the
University in Halifax NS.

Ribbon seaweeds contain

iodine compounds which can
be obtained by extracting
Iodide ions from seawater.

Iodine can be extracted from the

seaweed by heating it in air to an ash,
in which the iodine is present as
iodide.
The iodide is dissolved out of the
residue by boiling water, the solution
filtered and the iodide oxidised to
iodine using hydrogen peroxide.
The iodine colours the solution brown
at this stage. Isolating the iodine from
this solution can be done by solvent
extraction, followed by evaporation of
the solvent.
