In Class: Course Introduction. Introduction to online course resources. Discuss brainstorming and freewriting. In-Class
Rough Draft of Diagnostic Essay.
Week 2 Tuesday, September 8
In-Class: Discuss Academic Image and Success. Discuss the Connection Between Reading and Writing, and Introduction
to Narrative Writing and Narrative Essay. Discuss paragraphs and topic sentences.

Week 3 Tuesday, September 15
In-Class: Further discussion of Narrative Writing and the Narrative Essay--How to Write Strong Sentences and Use
Specific Details.

Pathways p.11-16 and Pathways p.17-27
Read "The Beautiful Laughing Sisters An Arrival Story" --this will be uploaded to the blog tomorrow.
Download it and when you finish reading answer questions 1-5 on the last page under Getting Reading to
Write and Reviewing the Reading.
Week 4 Tuesday, September 22
In Class: Discussing Essay Organization and Development. Brainstorm topic and outline in class.

bring to class.
Week 5 Tuesday, September 29

In-Class: Review Revision, Run-On Sentences, and Fragments, and working on Revising Narrative Essay

Week 7 Tuesday, October 13
In Class: Introducing Essay 2: the Identity Essay. Discuss Pronouns and Pronoun Agreement.

In-Class Readings of What My Culture Means to Me, Scar, and Light Skin vs. Dark Skin (download on
the blog and bring to classwe will read and discuss in class)
Week 8 Tuesday, October 20

In Class: Further discussion of Essay 2. Discuss adjective and adverbs.


DUE: Begin brainstorming a topic for Essay 2: the Identity Essay. Use the handout I gave you last week.

Read English: Friend or Foe p. 219 and answer question 5.


Read From Ignorant Bliss to Painful Awareness p. 510 and answer question 4.
Read Saying Adios to Spanglish p. 416 and answer question 4 under Reacting to Ideas on page 419
