SLE-2- Identify a wide range of sources of light, including the sun, various forms of electric lights,
flames, and materials that glow (luminescent material)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of a couple lessons students will be able to:
1) Identify what light is (Knowledge based)
2) Give examples of sources of light (Application based)
3) Categorize sources of light based on similarity (Application based)

Post-it notes (for two minute write- 2MW)

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


o Turn Smartboard on
o Set Timer for 2 min (for 2MW)
o Create bundles of envelopes on back counter (2-3 envelopes per person; 4 people in a group)
o Create 5 stacks of magazines & catalogues (on back counter)
o Put poster papers in a stack on the back counter
o Set extra scissors & glue sticks on back counter
o Have post-it packages for each group ready
o Write on whiteboard A: post-its, B: envelopes C: magazines
o Tape graffiti wall up in classroom where students can reach it & have markers on my table
o Bring a pop flat to collect students work
o Sign out Eric Carles The very Lonely Firefly

PROCEDURE
Introduction

Welcome Grade 4 students
Get students to choose three people from pod group: Student A: to get post-its
Student B: envelopes
Student C: Magazines & Catalogues

Pre-assessment

o 2 minute write
o Student A get one package of post-it notes from teacher
for their pod group (specify that each person should get
4 post-its)
-On post-its have students list what they know about
light (give examples, say what light is, etc.- one idea
per post-it)-once everyone has their post-its start the
timer on the Smartboard (2min)
-THINK-PAIR-SHARE
-Have each student turn to their neighbor and
share what they wrote down
-As a pod group share ideas and group post-its based on
similarity (categorize)
-Share with class how each pod decided to group the
different sources of light

-Brainstorm other ways to categorize/classify/group


sources of light as a class on the whiteboard
-ask students to come up with a few ideas of
what kind of pictures/types of things they
would see under these headings
-Have students show how many categories
they prefer to use- showing their preference
using fingers (2-4)
-Have Student B get stack of envelopes for their group members
(2-3 per group member) & Student C can get a stack of
magazines/catalogues
-Have students choose 2 or 3 ways to group sources of light (from
brainstorm list) label 3 envelopes and find pictures to go in those
specific categorized envelopes (make sure students name is one
each one)
-Students will collect pictures using magazines & old catalogues

-Students who have enough pictures can start their collage & grab
a poster paper from the back counter (must have clearly defined
categories on poster paper prior to gluing)

Clean up

-All students will put scraps in the recycling, put away scissors,
glue, and clean off desks
-Make sure students have extra pictures in envelopes and that
envelopes have their names on them as well
-One pod group at a time will come to hand in their envelopes &
poster paper if they started (make sure name is on back of poster)

Closure
Once students desk is clean, have each student write one thing they learnt on the
graffiti wall (using markers on my table)
