power supply and maintenance cost,
Furthermore, increasing the availabilty rate
decreases the risk of electrical outages.

Fast, sensitive & secure - P740 - the ultimate in busbar protectionPROTECTION
Busbar differential protection
‘The primary protection element ofthe P740
isthe phase segregated biased current
differential protection. The technique
isbased onthe numerical application of
Kirchof’s law for the selective detection and
lta high-speed isolation ofa faulty
section ofthe busbar.
‘The analysis is carried aut inthe Central,
Unit (CU) which communicates withthe
Peripheral Unit (PU) to gather current
information from individual circuits
‘and to implement the tripping of circuits as
required. This reliable, high speed
‘communication is achieved vie a direct
‘optical connection at 2.5 Mbps.
To ensure the adaptability ofthe relay to any
typeof busbar configuration, the P740 is
but witha universal topology processing
algorithm. This algorithm determines the |
‘optimum tripping zone based on the current
status ofthe plant isolators and circuit
breakers. =a i"
‘The P740 employs biased differential
algorithms, in which the differential current
is compared with a bias current, This
characteristic ensures stability of the
protection for external faults, even with
differing CT tolerance and etrors, which
ould lead to spurious operation.
CT saturation dete:
To increase the security of te differential
protection the biased differential elements
supervised by a biased global check zone
clement. This ensures stability, even under
an erroneous status ofthe auxiliary contact
of plant isolators and circuit breakers.
‘The MICOM ALSTOM P740 also employs CT
supervision and an innovative, ura high
speed, secure CT saturation detection
algorithm. This ensures stability when CTs
‘become saturated, particularly under
external fault conditions. This algorithm
combines a simulation of the fx built up in
the core of the CTs with a recursive
consistence variation control. This technique
can detect CT saturation in less than 2 ms.

crisisDual characteristics
To provide stability for severe through faults
‘and a the same time detect low current
internal faults, the Pr40 is equipped with
‘dual characteristics: one phase segregated
ifferential protection and another sensitive
earth curent differential protection.
Multiple tripping criteria
‘The P740 maintains the highest level of
stability under al conditions, including
hardware failure and incoherent signals
applied from an external plant or generated
by the power sytem. Any tripping order
must be made conditional tothe
simultaneous occurrence of 7 to 9 criteria:
Magnitude criteria requires confirmation of
‘two simultaneous thresholds per zone:
+ Exceeding the bas slope characteristic (k2)
«Exceeding the differential operating current
threshold (1D>2)
Check zone supervision

When switching operations are carried out
in the substation, incorrect topology replicas

breakers surrounding the busbars define the
