CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard
The procedure for the candidate consists of gathering information regarding
the context of the educational institution, classroom environment, students
background and teachers teaching methodology. The objective of this
observation process is to plan lessons according to the data gathered.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or

owner and school factors:
Founded in 1991, the UCSC is one of the four universities belonging to the
CRUCH and it holds more than 5.000 students. This MDD is focused on
students belonging to the Faculty of Education, located inside the premises of
the UCSC. The UCSC holds facilities located in various points within the
premises such as a library, computer rooms, laboratories, conference rooms,
classrooms, gym, bathrooms, casino, cafeteria, recreation spaces, nursery,
administrative buildings, radio and a wide range of cultural activities. The
UCSC socioeconomic profile is labeled as high in terms of the economic status
of the students. There is a high percent of students who belong to the highest
levels of incomes. Thanks to international agreements and interchange

programs with other foreign universities, the UCSC has become an

intercultural community, holding students and teachers from China, Australia,
USA and the UK.

1.1.

How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:

The fact that the students who are taking part in our lessons do not share the
same educational background may be a setback, due to there is a significant
variation concerning the level of English they manage. This factor will have a
strong impact in the development of our lesson in the sense that the lesson plan
will have to be carefully designed and adapted to the needs of the students. On
the other hand, the fact that there is a considerable amount of technological
appliances will have a positive impact in the development of our lessons, i.e.
there is no limitation to use any material we consider suitable for the students
learning. In addition, the classrooms are comfortable, there is enough space to
organize the students according to the activities required.
2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:
According to what has been observed, the following features are meant to
describe the learning environment in the observation class:
There is about 20 or more number of students, mostly women than
men.
The average of students was 15 per class.
All the students are Chilean and belong to English Pedagogy degree.
Judging by their class performance, it is possible to say that their have a
good level of English similar to A2 being in first year.
Their skill levels in Communicative Competence are pretty adequate on
grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. The use of the target
language is present at the moment of speaking to the teacher or in front
of the class, not while their work in their groups, which means that the
objective of the classes is not so hard to achieve.

2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:

The first observable characteristic in class is that students actually
understand what the teacher says and explains. They have no inconvenient
in understanding basic grammar structures and vocabulary.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

Work Sample. University of Northern Iowa, Level 2 of the UNI Teacher Education
Professional Sequence.

The specific student that we are observing in this part has a high level of
English, his pronunciation is really good, and it has a lot of vocabulary at the
moment of speak. The student express his ideas just when the teacher asks,
but when he does, he really know how to express what he is going to say using
a adequate vocabulary, very fluent and clear.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
The second observable characteristic in class is the number of students who
attend to the lessons. Lessons are carried out for no more that 20 students,
there is always about 4 students that arrive later, which can be a problem
because they miss the beginning of the class i.e the first activity.

3. Physical Aspects
Implications:

of

the

Classroom

and

Their

Instructional

According to what we have observed the classroom is large, it has wide

windows at the back that give natural daylight; furthermore, in the room there is
a computer with access to the internet, a projector and projection screen, a
whiteboard, a table and a chair for the teacher which are close to the whiteboard
and around 54 chairs for students.
Description of First Physical Aspect:
A large room which contains more than 50 chairs for 25 students. Every
chair is opposite to the whiteboard, and they are organized in six rows of
chairs. The classroom is painted in cream colour.

whole

Students may be seated in separated parts of the classrooms

Students in the front might participate more than students seated
back.
Teacher will have to speak louder in order to be understood by the
class.

Description of Second Physical Aspect:

The classroom has a projector and projection screen

The teacher could project power point presentations, imagines, songs and
more; in order, to create a proper educative environment. These are tools
that help to the teacher to integrate technology in her planification.

Reflection
We have been analyzing some aspects of the class and the students, and we
consider necessary to emphasize the importance of the level of English proficiency
of students.
In general, students have a good level of proficiency, five of them have lived or
travelled to a foreign country. Hence, most of them participate actively in class.
Consequently, task must be challenging
