"Patient's More Engaged in Anesthesia, Pain Relief Options When Given 'Decision Aids' or
Brochures." Infotrac Newsstand. Gale Group, 26 Oct. 2015. Web. 5 Nov. 2015.

Mainly about how decision aids and brochures can ultimately affect a patients decision
on how they will receive anesthesia and may also see if there are any other treatment
options available for them.
Did a survey where half the people about to receive surgery were given a brochure on the
risks/precautions/procedure of how they will be administered anesthesia during their
surgery.
59 people given brochure, 39 not.
Each person was given 2 days prior to their surgery to ask any questions.
Before beginning their surgery, each patient was evaluated on their knowledge of
anesthesia.
Each patient was given the same survey
Of all those people, the ones who asked the most questions were those who received the
brochure, people who did not have any background information asked fewer to no
questions at all.
The reason is that since they were able to see all the risks involved, it triggered them to
wonder if any medications or previous procedures could alter their surgery experience.
In the end, most people need to be more informed and have more knowledge on the
medical field.

This article was beneficial because it showed how many people will receive anesthesia unaware
of the risks they may be doing to their bodies. It is always more beneficial to ask for more
information, especially if you become anxious about the surgery.

"AAHA mandates dental anesthesia, intubation for accredited hospitals: rule applies to all dental
procedures, including cleaning." DVM Newsmagazine Oct. 2013: 22. General OneFile.
Web. 6 Nov. 2015.

New regulation states all veterinary patients must be anesthetized when receiving dental
surgery.
This also means they must be sedated when receiving something as simple as a cleaning
This is all due to the many injuries to veterinary technicians and veterinarians from
animals getting too wild or feeling unsafe during check-ups.
It states, that cleaning a companion animal's teeth without general anesthesia and
intubation is unacceptable and below the standard of care.
Article allows different perspective on anesthesia and how intubation airways are
common even in domestic animals.
Believe that with this new regulation, check-ups will be more effective and will become
quicker and safer for the medical staff
The guidelines state that general anesthesia with intubation is necessary to properly
assess and treat the companion animal dental patient. Because AAHA practices are
expected to practice the highest level of veterinary excellence, AAHNs leadership felt it
necessary to update this dental standard so that they reflect best practices outlined in the
guidelines."
With the help of this, it will also allow for the vets to help the animal even more by
removing all excess plaque which can eliminate gum disease or cancer.
The procedure will now even be pain free since the animal will be sedated.
Will soon become a necessary plan of action in all clinics

In this article it explains the need to intubate animals while receiving dental surgery or oral
exams. This article is relevant to my topic in the way that intubation tubes are present even with
animals and can be very beneficial and helpful to the Veterinarians and Technicians.

Ramkumar, Venkateswaran. "Preparation of the Patient and the Airway for Awake Intubation."
Indian Journal of Anaesthesia. Medknow Publications & Media Pvt Ltd, n.d.

Explains how timely an intubation exam may take

When explaining the procedure to the patient, the anesthesiologist must use simple
language
Patient will be given a sedative so no pain will be endured during the intubation process
Endotracheal intubation is usually the 1st intubation airway an anesthesiologist will learn
Anesthesiologists must perform an assessment of the airway before starting an intubation
procedure
The procedure of endotracheal intubation is itself divided into essential monitoring,
preoxygenation, and general or local anesthesia as indicated. While the majority of
endotracheal intubations are performed in an elective manner, a small number may be
done in an emergency.
Although one airway may be used more commonly, all intubation routes may be
potentially difficult
In emergency situations the 1-2-3 rule is applied so intubation is done quicker
The anesthesiologist must always make sure the patient trusts them before going into
surgery
Once the patient perceives the anesthesiologist to be empathetic and understanding, the
major portion of the battle is won.
Typically, patients with more anxiety will undergo endotracheal intubation because it is
most common and when the anesthesiologist explains the easy procedure, it makes the
patient more comfortable
Endotracheal intubation is best performed under general anesthesia
Endotracheal intubation is a necessary skill for any anesthesiologist
This procedure could typically save someones life
Always make sure the patient is comfortable and well informed on to what will be done
on them during the surgery, and what could possible happen in case of emergency

This article was beneficial in the way that it thoroughly explained the most common intubation
route for patients having surgery. It gave specific details on how the endotracheal tube is placed
and the different methods an anesthesiologist will use to perform this procedure.
