OBJECTIVES AND STANDARDS Standard 8 Analyze characters, settings, events, and ideas as they develop and interact within a particular context. Standard 8.1 Analyze how setting shapes the characters and/or plot and how particular elements of a narrative or drama interact; determine the impact of contextual influences on setting, plot, and characters. Students will be able to Analyze how setting shapes the characters and the plot Determine setting impacts the overall story MATERIALS: 1. Student copy of the text The Five People You Meet in Heaven 2. ELA Notebook 3. PowerPoint on setting Procedures: 1. Students will come in and take out their ELA notebooks. 2. On the board there will be a question for students to consider: How did setting impact/reflect Eddies experiences in the novel? 3. A tentative list answering the questions above will be created in open discussion with the class 4. Students will then be broken up into their table groups to complete the activity on setting 5. Students will be asked to create a board game where each major setting change in the novel is represented. At each level, or major setting change in the story, students will be expected to write trivia questions that reflect knowledge of each setting, its importance, how it helped Eddie grow as a person, and how it helped progress the plot. 6. After students create the games, they will be given a day at the end of the unit on the novel to play the board games. Assessment/Evaluation Students will be evaluated using a rubric. The rubric will have categories that require the students to hit the 6 major settings, the creativity of the board game, the grammar of the questioning, and several other categories.
