Lesson Plan One

Title: Language Guided Reading working on prediction


(This lesson can be extended to take up 5 class periods)
Materials:
-Post-it notes
-Book The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson
-Chart Paper divided into sections: Before Reading, During Reading,
and After Reading (these sections will each be used on a different day
if teacher decides to extend lesson)
Class layout:
-Split grade 4/5 class
-Students sit in pairs or individually
Time: 45 minutes
Description: This lesson deals with the topic of racism
-Teacher passes out a sticky note to each student in the classroom (5
min.)
-Teacher reads the title of the book (The Other Side) and shows the
class the front cover of the story (2 min.)
-Ask students to write down what they think the book might be about
on their sticky notes (5 min.)
-Discuss some of the students ideas together with the class (10 min.)
-Have each student go to the chart paper and add their note to the
Before Reading section (2 min.)
-Teacher then reads the book and walks around class making sure that
all students can see the pictures (5 min.)
-After reading, teacher asks the students if their predictions were right
or if they think the book is actually about something different Why do
they think their predictions were right? Or wrong? (10-15 min.)
-Tell the students we will be reading this book again during the week to
look closer at different parts of it (2 min.)

(Continued from Lesson One)
Title: Language Guided Reading working on symbolism
(This lesson can be extended to take up 5 class periods)
Materials:
-Post-it notes
-Book The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson
-Chart Paper divided into sections: Before Reading, During Reading,
and After Reading (these sections will each be used on a different day
if teacher decides to extend lesson)
Class layout:
-Split grade 4/5 class
-Students sit in pairs or individually
Time: 45 minutes
Description: This lesson deals with the topic of racism

book (5-10 min.)
-Ask students to define what a symbol is and make sure everyone
understands give examples (the maple leaf is symbol of Canada) (5
min.)
-Tell students to look for symbols in the book while the teacher reads
the story and tell each student to write down at least one symbol on
his/her sticky note
(5 min.)
-Teacher then reads the book and walks around class making sure that
all students can see the pictures (5 min.)
-After reading, discuss the symbols that the children found in the book
and their meaning
(10-15 min.)
-Have each student go to the chart paper and add their note to the
