2015 SDSU Bull Sale

Greetings,
We look forward to seeing you on April 10th at the South Dakota State University Cow-Calf Unit for the 2015 SDSU Bull
Sale. The Seedstock Merchandising class is excited to visit with you about our quality bulls. We have been diligently working all spring to advertise and work on our catalog and videos. This class is comprised of a group of talented individuals
with a passion for the beef industry. Please come early to enjoy lunch and visit with us about the bulls we have for sale.
The bulls offered this year will fit any budget with minimum bids ranging from $3,000 to $4,000. In our 2014 sale, the bulls
averaged $4,587 overall with a range of $2,800 to $8,600. Angus bulls averaged $5,088 with a range of $2,800 to $8,600
and the SimAngus bulls averaged $4,053 with a range of $3,000 to $5,700. Bulls were sold to buyers from South Dakota
and Minnesota. Many of the bulls were sold to repeat buyers...a testament to the reputation of quality in our program. We
are also proud to have three of our bulls in stud with some of the premier semen suppliers in the country. S D S Graduate
006X, S D S Alumni 115X, and S D S In Force 112Y have all been purchased by Gibbs Farms from Alabama and Cow
Camp Ranch from Kansas. Graduate semen is available through Genex. Alumni semen is available through Allied Genetic
Resources and OriGen. In Force semen is available through Select Sires.
A special thanks goes out to Kevin Vander Wal and his crew at the Cow-Calf Unit. We are extremely appreciative of the
tireless hours that these individuals have dedicated to our purebred cow herd. This sale, in addition to many other student
activities, would not be possible without Kevins committment to our program.
Please feel free to stop by the Cow-Calf Unit and view the bulls at any time. If you have questions pertaining to the bulls,
please feel free to contact a member of the Seedstock Merchandising Class, Kevin Vander Wal (605-688-4025; kevin.vanderwal@sdstate.edu), or Dr. Cody Wright (605-688-5448; cody.wright@sdstate.edu).
Kind regards,
2015 Seedstock Merchandising Class
Members: Tim Anderson, Tara Blom, Jerad Brown, Dusty Compart, Liz Dahl, Kirk Gilbertson, Tate Glaus, Sara Glisczinski, Travis Hofer, Brooke Luetkeman, Ali Rist, Olivia Siglin, and Katelyn Stark

How the Limited Auction Works

The bulls will be on display beginning at 10 am on Friday, April 10th. Prospective buyers should complete a bidder card
and list the bulls they would like to bid on. Bidder cards must be turned into the registration table by 1:00 pm. The sale will
begin with the bulls that have the greatest number of bidders interested in them, regardless of breed. For the bulls with more
than one interested bidder, a limited auction will be held. Bids will begin with the minimum bid and increase incrementally.
Once a bidder declines a bid, they are out of the limited auction. The auction will continue until only one bidder remains.
In the event that only one bidder is interested in a given bull, they will have the opportunity to claim that bull for the minimum bid. Bidders are encouraged to list more bulls than they intend to purchase on their bidder card. Listing a bull on the
bidder card does not oblige a bidder to purchase a bull, it only ensures they will have the opportunity to participate in the
limited auction. Bulls not sold during the limited auction will be for sale at the minimum bid on a first come, first served
basis. SDSU retains the right to in-herd semen use at our expense and the buyers convenience.

Sale Day Phone Number: (605) 688-4025

Guarantee
Only bulls with satisfactory semen quality and scrotal circumference will be sold. If a buyer is not satisfied with the reproductive performance of their bull, please contact us within 8 months of purchase. We may request that the buyer return the
bull to SDSU at the buyers expense. We will then offer credit toward the purcahase of a replacement bull at our next sale.

Free Delivery
SDSU will offer free delivery of bulls within 200 miles of Brookings, SD. We will also deliver bulls to our Cottonwood Research Station, near Philip, SD, for pick up. Delivery of bulls will be scheduled in late April and early May. If buyers pick up
their bulls in Brookings, SD, prior to June 1, they will receive a $100 discount per head.

Volume Discount
Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls, paid by the same check, and transferred to the same name will receive a 10% discount
from their purchase price.

Bull Management and Health

The bulls were pasture weaned on September 22 and did not receive any creep feed prior to weaning. Our goal has been
to have them spend more time on pasture and avoid overconditioned bulls at one year of age. The bulls were started on a
dried distillers grains plus solubles and soybean hull supplement one week after weaning and remained on pasture until late
October. They were then placed on a 0.47 Mcal/lb corn silage-based diet for development. They have been vaccinated and
were ultrasounded and semen tested on February 26. All of the bulls in the sale have a minimum of 32 cm adjusted scrotal
circumference and have passed a semen evaluation conducted by Shnurman Sire Service. Reports will be available on sale
day. The bulls have all tested negative for BVD-PI type 1 and 2. We have had no known cases of Johnes and have tested the
entire cow herd for each of the past 10 years. Angus bull 423 is a carrier for DD. All SimAngus bulls offered in the

sale are homozygous polled and black, either by pedigree or by testing, except 419 is heterozygous polled and
482 is heterozygous black.

Minimum Bids
The minimum bids were assigned by the SDSU Seedstock Merchandising Class in collaboration with Dr. Cody Wright and
Kevin Vander Wal.

New SDSU Cow-Calf Research and Education Unit

Plans are toward a new cow-calf research and education unit to provide modern facilities required for education and research in the areas of beef production and management. The new facilities will enhance the undergraduate student experience in the field of animal science, expand undergraduate, graduate and faculty research efforts, and improve outreach
opportunities for workshops, field days and demonstrations. A number of individuals, families, and allied industry partners have already made significant investments in the future of the beef industry by generously committing $2.5 million
toward the new facility. However, further funding is needed to achieve the desired outcome. If you are interested in making
a donation to the new Cow/Calf Research and Education Unit, please contact Mike Barber at the SDSU Foundation (888747-SDSU) or Dr. Cody Wright (605-688-5448)

This Hoover Dam son is a slam dunk calving ease sire. With a RE EPD
that is the best in the Angus offering and in the top 2% of the breed he
will definitely put muscle into his calves. On the hoof, he is a sound as
they come. To top it off he is in the top 5% of the breed for $W.
